WIDNES residents have raised £1,500 for a retiring postman who is close to their hearts.

Eric Houghton, of Hale Bank, is to hang up his postbag after more than 35 years delivering letters to homes across the town.

The cash retirement gift was collected as a result of a drive led by Lynton Crescent’s Dora Buff.

Eric was honoured at a special presentation afternoon at the Lynton Crescent Playing Fields on Sunday.

Dora said the retiring postman had given distinguished service to the people of Widnes and claimed he went beyond the call of duty on many occasions.

She said: “Eric has been a postman for more than three decades, it’s the only job he has ever had.

“Everyone in the town knows Eric.

“We organised a collection for him and raised £1,500.

“Sunday’s presentation afternoon was a beautiful day and lots of people turned out to thank Eric for his service to the community.

“He was always reliable no matter how extreme the weather.

“He would trudge through the snow in winter and brave scorching temperatures in the summer.

“You could set your watch to Eric, he was always early or on time.

“He definitely will be missed but he certainly deserves a great retirement.”

Eric thanked Widnes residents for their generosity.

He said: “I would like to thank everyone for their kind words. The cards and gifts are absolutely wonderful. My thanks go especially to Dora, Mary, Angie and Rose from Lynton Crescent and Sue and Marie from Kershaw Street.”
