I can imagine Linos dangling the thermometer to get a reading and if it,s too high, gobbing on the glass to lower it a bit.

If Royal Mail did this you would still have to work your hours and knowing RM management they would probably chose Sunday or midnightTrueBlueTerrier wrote:At Westminster, several MPs have backed an early day motion calling for a maximum temperature for workplaces.
They say no-one should have to work anywhere that is above 30C (86F) and those doing "strenuous work" should be allowed to down tools once their workplace reaches 27C (81F).

Re: How to stay safe in the sun
I can see 4 weeks in summer being 30 hours a week, and we would have to make up the time in Dec /Jan, so no Xmas O.T.Groundpounder wrote:If Royal Mail did this you would still have to work your hours and knowing RM management they would probably chose Sunday or midnightTrueBlueTerrier wrote:At Westminster, several MPs have backed an early day motion calling for a maximum temperature for workplaces.

Re: How to stay safe in the sun
The bloody Union should have sorted this out years ago when RM started changing our start finish time, This situation was always going to happen sooner or later when they allowed them to change start times. They may feel that its not such a problem in this country as we dont get it that hot usually, but that is in fact the reason its more important. IE we are not used to this situation and are therefore not acclimatized when the weather does turn hot .

If you feel unwell then yes you should phone the office and let them know you cannot cont with the delivery. Find some shade stop delivering and sit down and try to rest. Hopefully they will send someone out to find you and return you to the office to recover.
Lets get this straight working in these temps for some people can kill, don't take chances and suffer heat stroke or worse.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

They have to by law as they have a duty of care. However you need to let then know you are in trouble with the heat.

Re: How to stay safe in the sun
Delivering to firms is getting annoying...
Me: "It's bloody hot out there"
Receptionist: "We mustn't moan though must we, it's lovely this weather"
Says you, in your freezing air conditioned office who's only out in the heat for the distance between your building and your car where you pop the air on on, whereas we're out all day/in a sweltering greenhouse of a van/DO with no air con... Yeah, we mustn't grumble about the heat.

Maybe the CWU outdoor / H&S dept. should issue a statement & persue it in talks with RM... with global warming its a problem thats not going to go away.

Re: How to stay safe in the sun
Our office won't supply suncream because 'it's a health and safety issue.' Somebody in another office used some and came out in a rash.
When I asked about the health and safety issue of not having any, I was told that Royal Mail supplies us with enough uniform to keep ourselves covered up from the sun. Because we're all going to wear jackets in the summer, right? Do managers even think about what they're saying anymore?
I'm lucky enough to deliver where there's a bit of a sea breeze. Not sure how I'd be coping in London! I think the 7am delivery/sorting the rest up when you get back is a fantastic idea. Shame it'll never happen. Never mind, we can just contribute to global warming even more by scrapping bikes and using vans instead.

Re: How to stay safe in the sun
By the time CWU/reps do anything about the hot weather, summer will be over and it will all be forgotten.
