SPECIAL celebrations took place to mark a big birthday for a former postwoman.

Staff at Collyhurst Care Home in Bedworth made sure that Lil Brandist’s 106th birthday was celebrated in style, surrounded by everyone who cares about her.

The caring colleagues arranged all sorts of surprises for their oldest resident including a cake and a live singer, who provided some top musical entertainment for everyone to enjoy.

As well as spending the special occasion with her friends at Collyhurst, Lil was also visited by lots of her family throughout the day, including her sons Tom and Reg, who could not wait to wish their mum well on her special day.

She also has four other children and has 14 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and six great, great grandchildren who passed on their loving birthday messages.

Mrs Brandist, whose maiden name was Lil Morson, was born on July 9, 1907 in Longford but has spent most of her life living in Bedworth.

She worked at the old Courtaulds factory in Coventry before changing career and working as a postwoman in Bedworth for many years.

Her late husband Henry Brandist was a painter and decorator and she lived with him in Marston Lane before moving to Conifer Court and then to Collyhurst.

Having lived through two world wars and seeing five sovereigns take to the throne she has many stories to tell and still enjoys sharing them with her loved ones.

Having already reached the great ages of 100 and 105, Lil Brandist had two congratulations cards from the Queen and now there is one more to add to the collection as another dropped through the letterbox in time to mark the massive milestone of 106.

Her son Tom Brandist said: “My mum is a very personal lady but she definitely enjoyed the attention on the day and loved getting hugs and kisses from all of her family, friends and staff at Collyhurst.

“I also know she looked forward to receiving the card from the Queen, it really made her day.”

He added: “I want to say a big thank you to everyone at Collyhurst Care Home for making her birthday so special.

“They organised a singer, who entertained everyone with lots of old hits such as Elvis and Beatles classics and they also got her a cake and residents enjoyed a glass of sherry to celebrate.

“For 106 she is still very alert and surprises everyone with how she is, it was only January at the age of 105 when she moved from a complex to the home but she enjoys the company of others, there are some lovely people there, other staff and residents.”

Good for her.

Can't see any of us lasting 'til that age, with the job as it is, and likely to get worse.
