Strike Fundraiser in Leeds

Post by redrebecca »

Hi,

I'm from a socialist youth group called Revolution and this Saturday (6th) we're doing a stunt/stall on Briggate in Leeds to raise money and support for the strike. We've done it before in the city centre and also over the summer at Unity Day in Leeds and it was a big success :Very Happy

We're going to be selling these badges http://shop.fifthinternational.org/prod ... 17ee20e004 from which all the proceeds go to the posties and also running around with collection buckets and a banner that says 'Victory to the Postal Workers!' (I can put an image of it up cos I'm at work but it's on the 'I Suppost the Postal Workers!' facebook group http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2394038466). We've also managed to get some clothes off a postie (poor guy must be cold today!) so if we manage to get ahold of a Gordon Brown mask there'll be a stunt too!

It'll be from 12:30 til probably about 14:30 (maybe longer if it's sunny) on Briggate so if anyone wants to come along and do some fundraising then please message me or just turn up :-)

We'll also be down on the picket lines on monday morning to hand over whatever we raise

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Here are some of the messages of support from facebook:

'I definately support the postal workers. Whilst those at the top receive massive bonuses - the workers are expected to accept reduced pay and conditions. they have my support.'

'I'm 100% behind you in this ongoing dispute. To me the post office is slowly being privatised frtom within and this should not be allowed to happen! Are these closures and job losses going to improve the service..? NO. Would they give the leaders of the royal mail a big bomus for imposing these plans..? YES.

Keep fighting and i'll push for a donation to your strike funds at our next branch meeting.'

'I would just like to add that despite the fact my degree results are due to be posted during the the next postal strike, I wholeheartedly SUPPORT THE STRIKE because some things are more important than just what's going on in my life! Stop the rot and support the strike.'

'Have just read on the bbc news website that the latest round of negotiations have failed and that you're planning more strikes. Please know that not every member of the public will be whining about their mail being late and that some of us will be pleased that there are workers out there prepared to stick it out for decent pay, decent treatment and decent public services for all of us! You certainly have my support!'

'I'm with the PCS Union, and work for HMRC. Our pay rise is a lousy 1.8%, or there or thereabouts. The government are looking to close numerous offices, halving their presence in Wales & Scotland.

Around about 25,000 jobs, probably more are under threat. We're well over a year into various strike action, and are looking to agree more soon.

So yes, whilst I feel 2.8% is a King's Ransom compared t ours, 40,000 posts is a monumental amount, so good luck with the action.'

'I think that those who whinge on about the loss of service due to the postal strike have got the wrong end of the stick. It is not posties we should be blaming for having to take strike action (no one likes losing pay), but the government, who are running down our postal service to prepare it for privatisation.

If they have their way hundreds of post offices will be lost, we will have later deliveries and thousands of staff will lose their jobs. Rural communities will lose their post offices - often a vital way for the elderly and isolated to keep in touch.

There are more important things in life than profit - like community, public service and keeping in touch with each other.

We need to keep our post office public. Support the posties and their completely reasonable pay demand to be paid at least in line with inflation, on the same conditions as they are at present.

The PCS and CWU are showing the way forward. For united strike action against Brown's public sector pay freeze!'
