More than £2million was shared between just nine top executives and senior managers

Post Office bosses are being paid £15.4million in bonuses – as many sub-postmasters see their incomes slashed.

More than £2million was shared between just nine top executives and senior managers, including Paula Vennells, chief executive of the state-owned postal service, who earns £463,000 a year.

The other £13million went to managers and staff.

The National Federation of Sub-Postmasters, which obtained the figures for 2012/2013 under a Freedom of Information request, condemned the payments as a “kick in the teeth” for its members and called for an urgent review of the bonus system.

Spokesman George Thomson said: “To pay senior staff such huge bonuses at a time when sub-postmasters are struggling to keep their post offices open and the network requires massive government subsidies is morally reprehensible.”

Mr Thomson said more than half of sub-postmasters have seen their incomes nosedive in the past year.

He added: “A quarter of our members are taking no income at all from their post office, and can only stay open through using their pension or savings, or other income.”

A Post Office spokeswoman said: “Like many companies, the Post Office has various incentive schemes in place to help us to attract, reward and recognise our people at all levels across the organisation.

This enables us to keep the best people to shape and deliver the success of the Post Office through one of the important phases of its development, as we are transforming the business, improving customer satisfaction and setting a course for a bright future."

Hundreds of members of the Communication Workers Union walked out of high street post offices on a 24-hour strike yesterday in a long-running row over branch closures, jobs and pay.

What about a decent pay offer for staff? To reward and recognise THEM.
Instead of the repeated attacks on current pay and T&C's that they are suffering. Again.

The rich get richer.
An all too familiar tale here in this painfully unfair nation.
