Councils are being warned that the closure of a postal sorting office could spell trouble for small businesses in our area.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has been telling councils that it is concerned the Ipswich Mail Centre will be closed, with operations moving to Chelmsford.

The move would delay delivery times, according to Dave Scott, branch secretary for Suffolk.

“From West Suffolk right up to beyond Thetford there would be an extra 90 minutes on deliveries and collections would have to be earlier too.

“It could have a bad effect for small businesses and people who work for themselves as they’ll have less time to turn around mail, squeezing the time they can get things done,” he said.

Representatives from the union have already visited St Edmundsbury Borough Council, Forest Heath District Council and a number of town councils across West Suffolk.

Negotiations between the unions and Royal Mail have been going on since November, with a decision expected within the month.

Royal Mail were unable to comment on the situation before the paper went to press.
