I really can't understand why in 2013 a company like Royal Mail can't level the mail out over the week so daily volumes are the same. If a company like TNT bought RM. I'm sure that's one of the first things they'll resolve.

No. The first thing they'd resolve is our wage structure. Down to minimum wage ASAP.cyberheater wrote:I really can't understand why in 2013 a company like Royal Mail can't level the mail out over the week so daily volumes are the same. Re: mail volumes.
I delivered 27 hours post in only 15 hours and all while being whipped to death after being made to eat cold poison............and you tell the new starts that they lead a life of luxury and they look at you funnyfishtank wrote:Today I fully prepped two duties in around 60 minutes admittedly they both only had 1 D2D.clashcityrocker wrote:Are they taking their orders direct from Brussels now?chuzzwuzzer wrote:'Management love to sprout out about how mail volumes drop this time of year.
Anyway - today I fully prepped two duties in 75 minutes and delivered one of them in 1h 55.
My partner and I delivered both in a combined time of seven and a half hours or 3hrs 45 mins if you want to look at it like that.
I love the way our T&Cs are the same throughout the business.

Re: mail volumes.
The way mail is now is different and the mail houses which print the work for both the DSA companies and Royal Mail are busy at different times meaning that volumes of work will not be the same all during the week. Equally more people order on line at weekends and this is normally put into our system Tuesday night the reason why most mail centres have their highest traffic on this night.
Approximately 75% of Mail is recorded and counted by the machine and is reasonable accurate. The remainder is always questionable , when a mail centre is under pressure often the accuracy of what is dispatched can be off the mark. Plus Royal Mail only sample a small number of DSA customers and revenue protection often bill big posters for inaccurate numbers.
Royal Mail estimate that we are now handling the same traffic levels as we did in 1991 which was considered a boom year. The big differences from now and then are that did not have DSA back then , the majority of postal workers were on a 6 day week working 41.5 hours on two deliveries and with about 50 000 more postal workers. We had very little automation and we counted work mainly by sampling and manuel counting and as our bonus back then was dependent of traffic levels were we accurate well I am not sure we were.

Re: mail volumes.
Last year from July till the start of September I found it hard to make up more than 3 bags of mail any day, even lite on parcels. The weather usually nice, people go out and buy stuff, instead of online, And its the holidays, most people still take a vacation i think? But i do work in a very small office, don't know if that makes any difference?chuzzwuzzer wrote:'Summer Lull' is a myth.Management love to sprout out about how mail volumes drop this time of year. You get heavy days, you get light days just like any other time of year .

Re: mail volumes.
This is my 21st summer.
In all 21 of those summers the mail has reduced.
Royal Mail overplay it both in the amount it reduces and the length of time it reduces for but reduce it does.
We do our own count and we have a mailcentre count, being the rep I get to see both figures on a daily basis and they are usually not too far apart.
There would be no point in our office management downplaying our own count because that would make the office EP appear worse than it was.
I also do the job and know my frame and how much mail it gets or doesn't get.
One thing that doesn't seem to reduce any more though is parcels.
10 years ago at this time of year you would be lucky to see half a dozen for your whole duty, now it's pretty much the same all year round with parcels apart from the run up to Christmas obviously.

Re: mail volumes.
I've been with RM nearly 6 years and haven't noticed any drop in mail volume. Even then, so what? Call rate is what matters. If I had on average 3 letters a day for one house 5 years ago and now it is 1 letter a day.... it makes no differences... I still have to walk down the drive and post the letter. Royal Mail just wants to bury its head in the sand on this issue. "Mail volume has fallen x percentage" Royal Mail constantly bleat in the Courier and WTL videos. Who cares? Talk to me about the fall in call rate. Hasn't happened. In fact, it has gone up because of a) revised walks b) new properties being built. Walk sequenced mail makes a small dent in this only.
You must understand that I am here purely as A BEARER OF MESSAGES.

It makes a huge difference to your indoor workload.Harry_Perkins wrote: If I had on average 3 letters a day for one house 5 years ago and now it is 1 letter a day.... it makes no differences...
Less indoor work means more scope for longer outdoor work.

The amount of seconds filtering mail for the next address while standing at the preceeding delivery point (because you are not filtering while walking, are you?
But when you get more parcels to deliver on these modern walks mid summer, compared to pre-revision Xmas pressure weeks a few years ago (before internet shopping really took off), a lower call rate and lower amount of mail per delivery point is quickly eaten up, easily resulting in walks needing overtime to complete during this so called "quiet" period (when managers truely believe we should be lapsing because we are below the "model week").

You have to look at the make-up of the traffic.
You could be 6 000 under your model week - 4,000 less letter. 4,000 less flats but 2 000 more packets.
Every walk should have displayed the number of attendance calls the duty span was based on and this should be taken into consideration when lapsing is discussed.
