What a load of crap,I have been a postie for over 40 years diagnosed 15 years ago with type 2 which surprised my doctor because I am average weight don't smoke or drink with no history of it in the family.i am starting to feel it now after finishing my delivery so within the next year or so I will be finished I think because as every postperson knows the job is now so much harder without having to deal with this as well.

See thats why you shouldn't generalise. Obesity and being overweight can cause Diabetes 2, and I guess this is what caused your brothers. However, Type 2 is also caused by such factors as being over 40, being of South Asian, African-Caribbean or Middle Eastern origin, have a genetic disposition to it, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes is also increased if you have impaired fasting glycaemia (IFG) or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), and also if your a woman who had gestational diabetes during pregnancy then you also have a greater risk of developing diabetes in later life.

So while your suggestion that diabetes can be caused by your own actions, to blame all instances of the disease to that single cause is an oversimplification and why people got heated under the collar. Never put people in boxes, they have a habit of jumping out of them an hitting you in the face.

if you read it i only said that the type 2 is of there own doing which in 90 percent of the cases this is found to be true.type 1 is classes as the medical condition by the doctors as you have no control of when it happen to you or if it will happen

Diabetes in the workplace - A Practical Guide
Specific guidelines for:
Type 2 diabetes (controlled through tablets and healthy living)
There should be no limiting factors to employment associated with non hazardous roles unless the condition has disabling complications. Type 2 diabetes, controlled by diet or medication, has only a limited need for glucose monitoring and this will certainly not be a restrictive employment factor in non-hazardous roles. Therefore, the competency of the individual to fulfill their duties, with or without reasonable adjustments, within the scope of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995/2004 should be the basis of reviewing the situation.
Specific guidelines for:
Type 1 and 2 (insulin-treated diabetes)
Suggested guidelines for people with insulin-treated diabetes are summarised below. These are particularly relevant in potentially hazardous occupations.
Individuals should:
be competent and safe to carry out their duties
have their diabetes under regular (at least annual) specialist review
have their diabetes under stable control
self-monitor their blood glucose, using a memory chip glucose meter, and be well educated and motivated in diabetes self-care
have no disabling hypoglycemia and normal awareness of individual hypoglycemic symptoms
have no advanced retinopathy or nephropathy, nor peripheral or autonomic neuropathy
have no coronary heart disease, peripheral vascular disease or cerebrovascular disease
have their employment reassessed annually by either, or both, an occupational and diabetes specialist physician.

Sorry to offend anyone but my brother was told as his type 2 was not insulin based he was not coverd by the act
But then again there's so many different rules.
