The Union were right "An open letter"

Post by stephen500 »

Dear Jon Millidge, ( An open letter)

So the union were right, you did have a proposal regarding our pension.
Is this the same pension you said at the point of transfer was "fully funded" at the point of transfer.
It is interesting to note that the "problem" has come about just a few months prior to a possible change of ownership.
As members of the scheme we have been hit with a twin pronged attack of the company wanting to ensure transfer of ownership to the private sector and the government buying gilts through quantitative easing bringing down the returns for pension funds.
So you now want to "address the problem" and assure us this is "legally binding" and will address the issue for the future?
Is this the same assurance that you gave us at the point of transfer?
The assurance that has lasted all of five years.
This proposal appears to have been watered down from the original proposal that I was told was discussed by the company and the union, in that proposals would have a 5 year protection for Royal Mail employees.
You appear to have jumped on the "Post office" band wagon and even removed that in line with "Post office" proposals.
How can I or any other members of the scheme plan for retirement?
You and the government change the goal posts several times in a decade.
I suggest the reason you broke off talks prior to conference was that you did not want the CWU leadership to discuss the issue at the conference.
I would also suggest that your reasoning has very little to do with your concern for the members and as I said very much to do with the current and future projections of balance sheets prior to a change of ownership.
Much the same reasoning can be brought to bear re our 2013/14 pay negotiations.
I would not be surprised if these dragged on till Oct and you then, as in the past, failed to include back dated pay.
I am sure that yourself and other members of the Royal Mail executive will still retain you gold plated pensions and benefits.
I have worked for Royal Mail since 1977 and had been forced since I was 18 to pay into the Royal Mail pension scheme.
As you know the CWU is currently consulting with it's members and these proposals, will I am sure swing a positive vote for the union's position.
With the letter "Our Pension Plan; The company wants to safeguard your pension", which would be so laughable if not so serious for it's members, you have shown the board to be what they are.
A group of self serving individuals that will stoop to any depths to have a healthy balance sheet so the government can push ahead with it's plan to float Royal Mail.
In my house I also have colleague shares that are worth about as much as your promises on pensions.
It is also interesting to note that the cost of the proposed 10% of our shares appears to be almost the same as the £2 billion you want to use from our pension funds.
Talk about robbing Peter to pay Paul.
Why don't you give up on the idea of 10% of shares and invest this money in pensions?
It is also worth bringing to your attention, that none of these issues would have come about if the company had not taken an 16 year pension holiday. A time which saw the government received huge dividends from Royal Mail.
I for one will be voting for industrial action.
The company and the government have shown themselves for what they are, underhanded and willing to do any thing to achieve the ideological position you both crave, a change of ownership.
There is no one you will not disadvantage to achieve your aims, whilst protecting the boards gold plated pensions and benefits. :cry

I am a part of the CWU and wiLl not support Royal Mail's proposals to change the pension scheme and know there are many more like me, There is going to be a national pension forum on this issue involving all Branch's of the union. Stop sitting on the side lines there is no fence to. Sit on lobby your Branch oppose what Royal Mail plan. I know in London that is what we will be doing and we were the only ones in the UK at the Northampton Briefing in 2008 to ask for a strike on the attack on the final salary then. There is no plan b either you accept privatisation of our industry and a further attack with just a guarantee of 5 years or you decide that you support the CWU. There is no other choice , yes by all means continue to criticise the CWU for either BT 2010 or Pay and Mod but If we don't defeat the sell off and the pension attack we will be destroyed !!

The wording of the LTB released today makes me nervous.
I fear the link to final salary will be sold for improvements in the defined contribution scheme.
The two issues should be immediately decoupled as a condition of negotiations.
The defined contribution pension is very poor but it cannot be used to hold the union to ransom over the link to final salary.
Overall I felt the LTB did not go far enough.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Fish I share your concern but even more so that we step up the pressure there is no acceptable trade off and the fact that the PA to Dave is a pension trustee we also need to be aware and even more reason for Branch's and member to apply pressure.

Does anyone know what the exact proposals are, as the letter from Royal Mail and the LTB were both too vague.

The letter refers to 'condtions in the financial markets'. Both the New York and London stock markets where I assume the vast majority of our pension funds are invested are around record levels so I'm a little confused by this statement.

I do not think the pension fund is invested in the stock market anymore

Yes they wish to remove the link to final salary of all your service before 2008 when they ended the final salary scheme. Now if when you retire you will recieve all service before 2008 on a final salary . Royal Mail wish to change this to rpi with a cap of 5% . Royal Mail are saying they can only guarantee this for five years and then further changes can occur especially if privitasion happens !!

Royal Mail got into Gilts just as the rest of the market got out.

I bet the trustees made the mistake of investing in government Gilts, which pay out nought due to the government printing lots of money. They should have spread bet, 33% gilts, 33% stock m, 33% property. Our pension fund used to own the Whitgift centre Croydon and many other properties. The trustees and directors of RM should be challenged legally for alleged gross incompetence and made personally libable for our losses.

Forget the semantics this is about making the pension fund attractive to private investment ! It will lead to a massive surplus in the pension fund and will be even more attractive to investors ! I reported this more than 2 months ago this was on the cards and this is the classic 3 card trick before privatisation they could have declared this before announcing profits they choose to announce it less than a week after ! Have you woken up to the con yet ! Even wake up and fight or we will all get stitched up ! There is no other alternative !

If the Trustees are as incompetent as the managers (and the managers managers) I have encountered then this wouldn't surprise me one bit.

For long term investment you ALWAYS stick with stocks and shares as whatever woes are being encountered at a particular period of time the market ALWAYS recovers. In fact when the market is depressed is the best time to buy. It's just common sense.
