Billy Hayes interview on BBCNews 24

Just watched Billy and sadly have to say if I were a member of the public who saw Leightons interview on sky news and then caught Billy's on news 24 for the unions reasons for striking,I would'nt be any the wiser! He just seemed to keep repeating "Northen Rock Blah blah,government blah blah,Northen Rock",and then "17 year pension holiday".
The public aint that inteligent,they need simple facts.
After a full week of biased news reporting in favour of the royal mail stance in this dispute,I thought finally today of all days we'll get some exposure in the press and finally get the FACTS across to joe public,i.e. how much financially worse off the average postman will be every week, and then HOW MUCH on average will be lost from our retirement pension.
I'm sure those two facts could have been put across in the interview quickly and plainly for the public to finally understand it aint about 2.5% rise but a significant loss in real terms.

Anybody else see it ,am I being to harsh? He's probably a really nice bloke but I just thought it was a woefull interview

I think the point Billy was getting at has to do with the fact the government were quick enough to endorse the bank of england in pouring money into northern rock, but they can't be arsed to sort out the mess in the company where they are the shareholder

It's not cos they can't be arsed, it's because they don't want to. They wanna take on the CWU and they know a defeat in this dispute will be massive and pave the way to full privatisation.

We realised the point he was trying to get across cruisey,cos we're in this mess,I dont think it helped the public understand enough of what's really going on though.

I think thats spot on about the government not getting involved,cos it would suit them to see us lose and then be ripe to privatise.

What an appalling interview.
He didn't inspire,get our position across,and seemed flustered.
For someone who is supposedly locked in negotiations with Leighton and Crozier,he couldn't decide where they were.
to get airtime and then go on about sunday collections and Northern Rock!??
if he was rattled by the interviewer,what hope has he got with you know who.

Prospective New Labour Candidate "Red" Billy Hayes sponsored by Cain's Brewery & Holland's Pies . Seen this happen before , Leighton didn't exactly get Paxman on Sky , noone would dare question a Sky Director , it was more like a propcrapganda video . A lot of people have said let Ward do the talking and send Hayes down to the cakeshop to keep him out of the way.

Scruffy hair, creased clothes, repetitive comments, rubbing sleep from eyes - here is the man leading us to our glorious future - he really does make me wish I'd bought shares in Hollands pies when I was younger.

In fairness he's furious because Leighton and Crozier, like they do to us, have treated the CWU with contempt.

I really don't know where this is gonna go now. I suspect public feeling will have a lot of say in this, whether that's enough for RM to back down or CWU to agree on something, i don't know.

Mr Hayes, do as politicians do and answer the question that you want to and not the one asked.

The CWU and its members recognise the need for modernisation and if necessary the requirement to compete in an open market. Firstly the Government must allow RM to compete on an equal footing with our competitors by withdrawing restrictive practices currently imposed on RM.

We are not prepared and will not except any proposals from RM that effectively cuts our members wages and strips them of their current pension rights. We will not except flexiable working whereby under current proposals RM can change our members start and finish times at will. And if small businesses, and the Public are not happy with the mail arriving after 1.00pm they had better be prepared for it to be arriving even later as RM are forcing, without agreement, later start times meaning mail leaving the sorting offices even later.

Also one other point, I would like to raise. How can the Chairman of RM also be on the board of one of RM’s main competitors without there being a conflict of interest? His none appearance at the latest talks speaks volumes for his desire to solve the current dispute.

The interview on Channel 4 News was even worse. Why didn't the union put someone else on if Billy was that tired?
