Re: Dog bite 2nd time
all this dog attack stuff why blame the dog its the bloody owner thats at fault they should be the one to get prosecuted what is a dangerous dog i have american akitas according to the government a dangerous dog but in fact they are loyal and placid . i agree dogs should not be on the street without there owner but behind a gate there in there own patch if u know there is a dog kick or rattle the gate if the dog is out take the mail back never put your fingers in letter boxes if u get bit you will find its you thats a wrong not the dog, if u do find yourself being confronted by a dog dont get eye contact the dog will see this as a threat back off slowly with your mail bag in front of you and dont show fear never shout and stay calm and back off slowly and never turn your back to the dog ,ive been a postie for over 10 years and following theses simple tips and my experience with dogs ive never been bit ,but id like to state once again the dog is getting the bad rap when i believe 9 times out of 10 its the owner that is at fault by not being able to control there dog

Re: Dog bite 2nd time
Just thought I would post that my court case against this person was cancelled a week before going to court because the dog attacked a little girl a few months after the 2 attacks on us postmen and the dog was put down.
The CPS thought that taking the owner to court was a waste of time for a fine when they had the dog put down after the 3rd incident.
Thing is that the police wanted to prosecute the owner but their hands were tied by the CPS.
The owner gets off scott free by having the dog put down even though they didnt look after it ,plus what is to stop them getting another dog?

Re: Dog bite 2nd time
This is where RM managers are failing us.
What SHOULD happen after a dog bite attack (not by RM guidelines but by common sense) IS-
- The manager should visit the property and inform customer that RM will not be delivering to this address again until certain safe guards regarding the dogs security are enforced, such as a locked gate, and making customer aware that the dog should be secured into a room when answering front door.
- The manager should then suspend delivery to the address until these safe guards are met, like installing a locked gate.
- The customer should be informed that any further attack by that or any other dog from their property will result in the permanent cease of deliveries to their address and they have to collect mail from either the DO or maybe a closer PO to their address.
THIS is a common sense approach, but we dont see it happening, all we get are videos telling us to be aware and be careful, which doesnt help when you are "blindsided" by a dog with no chance of escape. if RM actually cared they would follow this simple procedure.
In fact they should issue leaflets once per year noting purely the 3rd point, if a dog attacks then deliveries to your address will be ceased, its fair warning and puts the responsibility squarely on the dog owner which is where it should be. This would probably cut dog attacks by huge amounts as most people dont want to collect their own mail everyday.
