1st stage 1 in 10 years

Just wanted to get it off my chest, I know a stage one's nothing too serious but it's the principal. It's just got me really angry and resentful towards management.

I've never had a single stage in the 10 years I've worked for R.M. I had surgery a few weeks ago and was advised to have two weeks off by the consultant. After returning to work I was find that I've been issued with a stage one warning.

The manager tells me he's taken into consideration the surgery AND my 10 years unblemished record but STILL issues me with a stage, seems like surgery is not a valid reason to have time off.

I'd put in a grievance against said manager as you can't appeal a stage 1 and he could have thrown it back and not issue especially if you are a 100% like me. I've niot been sick since 05 and in 22years no attendance stage warnings. I think it is disgraceful and out of order. I'd do it even if it is thrown just on general principle just to piss said manager off

It would depend - if you had surgery because you were unhappy with the size of your nose (for example) then it is no surprise.
If not - it is unnecessarily harsh.
Did you have union representation at the meeting?

And a stage 1 is serious because now if you need time off due to a cold/flu you will trigger a stage 2.
And then if a little while later you bend down and hurt your back you are looking at stage 3 and dismissal.
Stage 1s should be avoided at all costs because if you never get on the conveyor belt, you can't fall off.

You say it's not serious but two more sickness it could be possible you are up for the sack, say you were unlucky and went sick for a few weeks and got a stage two, then became ill again and had a few weeks off, it could be job centre time, it's unlikely but not impossible, so a stage one should never be taken lightly.

Never known a stage 1 or 2 to be dropped. Anyone know what they consider to be a valid reason to drop one?

My stage one is being overturned at the moment as it was issued to me when my reason for the absence was covered by the equality act. With the help of the union of course they managed to get it taken off my record

Management dont care I got my first stage one in 20 years after impinging my shoulder, not been off in 5 years since but makes you think should i just pretend im ill one week because that's the thanks you get for not abusing the system.

The nastier they become the more twisted the staff will be and that's totally understandable.

You should really start a new thread as I would like to know how wide spread this is. Our DO is unbearable nowadays.

Lapsing doubled even when over model week. Wilful Delay threats and daily abuse are just some of the things we look forward to. Getting out of bed and facing it all is harder and harder.

very soon after this ill thought out sickness procedure started i had 4 weeks off after having an operation to repair a damaged achilles tendon.
i was advised by the surgeon to take 6 weeks sick leave but i was bored to death sitting around all day so i went back to work as soon as i was able to but i was called into a meeting with my idiot of a manager who literally looked at a bit of paper with his instructions on how to go about this procedure and within 15 minutes of going in i was issued a stage 1.now i know you cant appeal a stage 1 but i went over the idiots head to his manager who i got on with ok and got it overturned as i pointed out that without the operation i couldn't do my job properly and would have had more time off than i did having the op.i also pointed out that a highly trained surgeon with 20 years experience had told me to have 6 weeks off and that the idiot manager with no medical training or knowledge had decided that a stage 1 was in order just because it said so on a bit of paper.i work in a small mail centre where a small amount of common sense was usually applied in those days but times have changed and this system seems to be used to offload staff rather than reduce sick leave and yes i am inclined to take liberties with this system since my experience all those years ago where as before this incident i had gone 14 years with no sick leave.

my stage 1 wasn`t issued as my manager failed to issue it within the 3 month rule.
printed the pdf off myself gave it to him with the 3 month rule highlighted and was let off due to mitigating circumstances. simples.

Could I put in a grievance on the basis that before my surgery my manager told me I'd get a stage 1 when I returned to work, so he pre-empted the actual decision which is a big no no right?

Even if you have you have done a good job, been friendly to your manager, and not had any time off due to sickness in years, he does not give a s**t about you. Even if you go to hospital to avoid serious illness or to prevent your death at a later date you will still get a stage. They will just sack you at stage 3 and get a replacement body. If you are older, in poor health or in circumstances where illness comes your way through no fault of your own, don't go sick unless you have no choice. If young, fit and healthy take 8 days sick per year and plenty of part days while you can, because they will give you less respect than a pig on the way to the abattoir later on.
