Royal Mail is almost tripling its fleet of double-deck semi-trailers to boost productivity on its trunking operations.

Network director Paul Tolhurst points out that the replacement of conventional straight-frame van trailers with drop-frame double-deckers enables the number of vehicles required to carry the same number of letters or packages to be cut by a third. Total fleet emissions and the associated carbon footprint are correspondingly reduced.

Altrincham-based Cartwright Group is building the 140 new maximum-length, 4.44m-high, tri-axle GRP-panelled double deckers, which feature an elevating upper deck that can be raised after loading to provide sufficient access.

Then why did RM close down the London Post office,, Underground rail then???? The T,PO was the fastest way to get lots n lots of mail from one of the most populated and busyest areas in the UK AND the cleanest.... So now all the mail goes by road... In a congestion charged area!!! hahahahahaha!!! RM say what they think sounds PC and right on!!! But really its all aload of bollox!!!!

These DOUBLE DECKERS are great if as BELIAL Says.. DSA providers will get there mail processed quicker and in bulk but the real stamped mail that RM get will slow off as RM again say IS on the decline....

NO MONEY FOR POSTIES BONUSES BUT TRIPLING THE LORRYS.....

We have 10 of the 75 york double deckers capacity parked up in our staff car park, apparently can't be used till 22nd October.

Has anyone seen the new 90 york capacity double decker?

Yes, they have been trying to train us up on them for a bit now. But there have been some Health and Safety issues with them. Amazingly, they have actually solved them now. Training recommenced towards the end of last week. They haven't got to me yet.

Personally, I don't see the point of sending them to RDCs. We don't have a single York Carrier, so they will have to be tipped, and pushed to the lines manually. We can't stack them 4 high like the RSCs, so we will run out of room very quickly. If you could load them with RSCs, I could see the point. But they will cripple our Centre, once they are in regular use!
