North Devon postman cries as news of Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement breaks in North Devon
A NORTH Devon postman was reduced to tears after hearing the shock news Sir Alex Ferguson is to step down as Manchester United manager at the end of the season.

The news broke this morning after the famously cantankerous Scot told his players and staff about his decision at a golf day yesterday.

And reactions varied as people across North Devon heard the news.

Newly elected Devon County Councillor A NORTH Devon postman was reduced to tears after hearing the shock news Sir Alex Ferguson is to step down as Manchester United manager at the end of the season.

Sir Alex Ferguson will step down at the end of the season, Manchester United have confirmed

And reactions varied as people across North Devon heard the news.

Newly elected Devon County Councillor Frank Biederman, who is also a postman, tweeted that one of his colleagues at the Royal Mail was in tears at the news.

When the Journal called Mr Biederman to ask him about his reaction to the news he said his colleague hadn't actually cried, but had tears in his eyes.

As a Liverpool fan Frank said he was pleased at the news. "But I don't want to upset half of North Devon," he said.

"Hopefully it'll give Liverpool a chance to compete again.

"Ferguson is United's Bill Shankly, he's irreplaceable.

"Once Shankly left Liverpool although Bob Paisley kept it going for a while it was the start of the decline.

"Who knows if it'll be the same for United."

Everton fan Nick Dartnall was less pleased by the news.

Everton manager David Moyes is the odds on favourite to take over at Old Trafford and Nick, who is from Bratton Fleming, says he's worried about Everton's future if Moyes leaves.

"It's scary isn't it," he said.

"We could nosedive if Moyes leaves.

"The worrying thing is if he goes then Fellaini probably would too and I don't know who'll come in.

"Where would we go from there?"

Nick, who is North Devon race horse trainer Victor Dartnall's nephew, works for Channel 4 racing and is working at Chester racecourse today – which is where Sir Alex is supposed to be spending the day.

"Everyone here's hoping to catch a glimpse of him," he said. "No-one seems to really care about the racing."

And even less pleased by the news was Man United fan Luke Berry, from Bickington.

Luke, 24, said: "I'm gutted, emotionally distraught.

"It's the end of an era."

He also said he was unsure who would take over at Old Trafford.

"It'll probably be Jose Mourinho but I don't want him," he said.

"He'll come in, get some glory and leave. He won't be there very long.

"I want Moyes, he'll be there for the long haul and he's very similar to Fergie."

Regardless of which football team one supports it's difficult to argue Sir Alex's departure won't have an effect on English football.

The famously ruddy-faced knight, 71, has won 38 trophies since taking over from Ron Atkinson in November 1986, including this season's Premier League title.

His haul includes 13 titles, two Champions League crowns, five FA Cups and four League Cups

Once Shankly left Liverpool although Bob Paisley kept it going for a while it was the start of the decline.

What a load of cobblers! Paisley was far more successful than Shanks, then came Joe Fagan who won 3 trophies in two years. Dalglish succeeded him and when KK left and Souness was put in charge THEN the decline started!

Feckin glory-hunters :evil/mad

I live in Devon, and the amount of twonks you see wearing Man U / Bin-dippers / Chavski shirts is unreal.

Refuse to engage in conversations about football with them, as their opinions have no value .

What a pile of sh*t ... they're not football fans - more like telly addicts ... it's this sort of crap that has ruined football ... what's wrong with supporting your local team (like wot I do) ... I really despair about the damage that Rupert bloody Murdoch has done to football - and the damage caused to the "proper" grass roots game ...

What a bunch of t*ssers ...
