Staff that take 5 hours to do a delivery when i see reserves doing same duty in half the time. I see new starters working more efficent than older workers yet older workers get first pick on duties etc. Not fair is it? Wrong system i say. Im not the fastest worker, but way i see it, in 20 years time royal mail will be better as i know the up and coming workers we have are better than the ones in place now.

Weed out the older guys and bring in the new is what i say :funneh

O dear. Car crash
whats happened to the original post ?..... did he feel a bit of a prat and deleted it?

Incredible post...and surely one of the most stupid ever to appear on this website....surely this was a wind up....to be honest..when i look at some of the new and younger starters who come into the business now....and how they use their cars, work over their time and not claim, never have a meal break,do a regular posties walk in half the time he or she does..then comes running back to the office with chest pushed out..waiting for the inevitable 'well done' from their line manager or'' have you done already remark''..heard it all b4.....to the original poster....you are an idiot.
and then they throw their toys out of their pram when they have a heavy day and have to work their time..

Seniority is the only really objective measure there is and that is why we have to keep it.

On its own it gets accused of being unfair. It worked in the past because job and knock and 'ghost' overtime gave something to the juniors. If the duties are based on the rate that someone can comfortably perform a day before they retire, younger and fitter people might be able to complete their work in less time. They used to have the option of going home early or doing overtime in their duty time. We should never have allowed Crozier to get away with his "Spanish practises" criticism.

Using length of service, job and knock and allowing so-called 'ghost' overtime keeps everyone happy.

What happens if you're old and junior?
Screwed because you can't run around and screwed by seniority.

Job and knock didn't keep everyone happy,It turned decent people into selfish bastards,It turned decent Posties into dodgy rule breakers,It turned decent managers into bonus driven savings addicts.
It was a f***ing disaster for job security.
You would know this if you worked in deliveries.

:wave :wave I will NEVER be in the top half of the seniority list at my place and I am content with that.

It has its faults by I still agree that seniority has its place in certain matters, and in selection for duties which are basically the same is one.

My argument wasn't against seniority but the slightly dafter argument that the ability of a younger member to sprint round a delivery compensated in some way.
Like most people I could make a long list of reasons why seniority is wrong but would struggle to find a suitable alternative.

What's mainly wrong with the use of seniority is the imbalance in workload between one duty and another but that isn't the fault of seniority selection, that's poor management, poor planning and in some cases some selfish members.

@ the character Fishtank who may or may not be a real rep.

Do you believe that trade unionists should strive for fairness?

Do you believe, that for all its faults, seniority is objective?

Don't you think that the way to make seniority more acceptable to juniors is to combine it with job and knock and 'ghost' overtime?

Do you believe that the employer is entitled to make an employee work as hard as they are capable of doing or do you believe that everyone should only be expected to work a fair rate?

Do you believe that retirement age has nothing to do with a reasonable expectation of what someone can do a day before retirement?

Look seniority is not perfect but compared to other selection methods of big employers its cannot be corrupted.

The CWU Reps who represent British Telecom had a very heated and emotional debate over performance management. Where members are selected for jobs on their sick record , their performance , their appearance and whole range of other issues and it has created an environment of bullying.

So tell what would trust Royal Mail with in terms of job selection etc ???

well ive noticed that they dont pick managers on a seniority basis these days, they get so called whizz kids or brainwashed arse lickers to do the job that most staff(especially d.o.) who have done the job for years wouldnt do. they will sack some poor sod at the drop of a hat these days.

They've never picked managers on a seniority basis.
The whizz kids are the result of the graduate entry training scheme. They were supposed to make the management base more professional.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.
