A postwoman carried out her round drunk and left her van full of parcels and letters open while she went for a sleep in the staff canteen.
Marcelle Robertson, 42, was found in a drunken stupor in the Post Office depot and could not be woken by police banging the windows and doors of the locked canteen.
Robertson had earlier been seen staggering into her van and driving off during her round, and had then abandoned the van outside the depot.
On Monday at Perth Sheriff Court, Robertson, from Kinross, was banned from driving for two years and fined £600 after she admitted driving while almost three times the legal limit. She admitted drink-driving in Kinross on October 10.
Fiscal depute John Malpass said: "At 3.40pm an off duty police officer observed the accused delivering mail in the area. He walked past and saw she was under the influence of alcohol.
"He observed her entering the Post Office van and driving off. At 4.10pm the vehicle was traced within the rear compound of the Post Office. The doors were lying open, the keys were in the ignition and the radio was on.
"The side door of the van was lying open and there were letters and packages on view. A handbag was found in the front passenger footwell. It belonged to the accused.
"The depot was closed for the day. However, they traced the accused lying asleep in the canteen area. The doors were locked and the officers banged the doors and windows to rouse the accused, but she didn't wake.
"The keyholder was contacted. The officers entered and woke the accused and noted her demeanour. Her eyes were red and heavy, her speech was slurred and there was a strong smell of stale alcohol from her breath."
Solicitor Steve Lafferty, defending, said Robertson had been suspended initially and had since lost an appeal against her dismissal and was now unemployed.
He said: "She appreciates this is a serious matter, especially given she was driving a postal vehicle. That is an aggravation in itself. She had been off work for a period trying to cope with the breakdown of her marriage.
"She had resorted to taking alcohol. On this particular day she had returned to work. She thought she was fit to return and resume her duties. She accepts she had been binge drinking and there was a significant quantity of alcohol in her system. She was in a bad state."
