I wonder if there's a tom Jackson type figure out there? ready to lead us to a sunlit upland. but to prove our mettle we will have to go out for 7 weeks.

It's a funny thing with Tom Jackson,despite leading the members out on probably the most disastrous periods of Industrial Action and suffering the humiliation of having to bring the members back in on worse terms than the original offer he still remained a popular figure with the majority of the membership.
They didn't really blame him.
Not that I was around in them days,well I was around but still in nappies.

Yeah - he means man nappies of course

On a serious note I remember him as a forceful and imposing figure in the media - and no I was still in the army then and union membership was prohibited.

my mum was a telephonist, and they at her exchange worked. ive told her off for it. I remember going down to pick her up with my dad and battling through the pickets, who were all postman. they were all solidly out and supported strike 100%. when I started at the sorting office in the mid 70's Jackson was still highly thought of. perhaps not a winning general though.
