The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Crime comes in too many different forms to try to put a band aid over the entire thing.UnhappyGremlin wrote:So what would you do to deter crime FT?
In order to tackle anything that is broken you first look at what caused it to break otherwise it will just break again.
Education and opportunity deters more crime than tougher sentencing, then there is policing.
Criminals must first fear being caught before they can fear the consequences,in order to do that you might need to turn the country into a virtual police state,do we want that and the cost that comes with it?
Then there is circumstance,if you're living in shitsville 24 hours a day with little hope of social progression will prison or tougher sentences hold any fears for you...I doubt it.
A kind of income based penal discrimination.
The truth is we are not in the middle of a crime crisis in the same way that we are not in the middle of an immigration crisis or a benefit scrounger crisis.
These are all straw men set up to distract attention away from the real issues facing the world...the big ticket items like war, famine, pestilence, climate change, resources,Britain's Got Talent....

Re: Letter-theft postie in suspended jail term
So if we increase the education budget we would eliminate crime...............hell why didn't we think of that sooner. Oddly enough you may have a point IMHO the education system today falls far short of what it was 50 years ago perhaps not in the 3Rs, though abysmal as it is, no no it is the fact that discipline is woeful, whoever thought it was a great idea to do away with corporal punishment............now there is a candidate for a public flogging. Not that it deterred everyone from transgressions but it was certainly a deterrent to the majority and anyone who believes that capital punishment wouldn't be a deterrent to criminals is sadly misguided. The reason why violent crime is on the rise is simply because there is little in the way of punishment - particularly when you see prisoners on TV - Christ 50% of them probably enjoy a lifestyle they could only dream of on the outside. There are of course open prisons, wtf - what on earth is the point of an open prison?clashcityrocker wrote:Much as I hate to sound like Blair - Education, education, education.UnhappyGremlin wrote: So what would you do to deter crime
In 2004 the 13th Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights became binding on the United Kingdom, prohibiting the restoration of the death penalty for as long as the UK is a party to the Convention. Now how would it be if we said the letting murderers live and set free to murder again or a serial killer on the loose contravened OUR human rights unless we hanged 'em - how would that play out? European Human Rights is a pussies charter - we should as a sovereign nation have the right to determine who should and should not be allowed to live here with impunity.

Violent and sexual crime
Although the 2010/11 BCS showed no statistically significant change in levels of violent crime in recent years (the apparent 6% increase between 2009/10 and 2010/11 was not statistically significant and followed a period of general stability in recent years), compared with 1995, it has fallen by one half(47%). Since 1995, violence with injury has fallen by 50 per cent and violence without injury by 44 per cent (see Figure 2.6 for trends in overall violence and Table 2.01 for all crime types). Within the overall violence category, the 2010/11 BCS showed a 38 per cent increase in assault with minor injury (591,000 offences) compared with 2009/10 (427,000). The number of assaults with minor injury has shown small fluctuations in recent years, with the current level similar to those observed in 2006/07.
It's smoke and mirrors DV that's all.
Changes in crime rates are almost always down to one thing,a change in the way the police categorise or police a particular crime.
If you type in the words increase in violent crime into google almost the entire first page is dedicated to Daily Mail and Telegraph "stories".
That should tell you all you need to know about where this nonsense is coming from and why.

Offences involving firearms
Provisional statistics for 2010/11 are available for police recorded crimes involving the use of
firearms other than air weapons (referred to as ‘firearm offences’ in the remainder of this
section). Firearms are taken to be involved in an incident if they are fired, used as a blunt
instrument against a person, or used in a threat. Finalised figures are planned for publication
in January 2012.
Provisional figures show that 7,006 firearm offences were recorded in England and Wales in
2010/11, a 13 per cent decrease from 2009/10 (8,052). Of the firearm offences recorded in
2010/11, 55 resulted in fatal injury, compared with 40 recorded in 2009/10. The 55 fatal
injuries recorded in 2010/11 includes the 12 people killed by Derrick Bird in June 2010
Following the introduction of the NCRS in April 2002, there were small increases in the
number of firearm offences recorded by the police until they peaked at 11,088 in 2005/06.
Since the peak, there has been a 37 per cent decrease This mirrors the trend in overall police recorded violence against the person.
Knives Recorded crime
With the exception of homicide offences the recorded crime statistics had not separately identified crimes involving knives until 2007/08.
Since April 2007 data on the number of offences involving the use of a knife or sharp instrument have been collected for a selection of serious violent offences viewed as the most likely to involve the use of knives. This group of selected offences originally comprised: homicide, attempted murder; wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH); wounding or inflicting grievous bodily harm (i.e. without intent); robbery of business property; and robbery of personal property.
The offence coverage was extended from April 2008 to include other violent and sexual offences such as threats to kill, actually bodily harm, rape and sexual assaults. There was also a clarification in Counting Rules for GBH with intent meaning that the total numbers of offences involving knives are not comparable between 2007/08 and 2008/09.
In the twelve months ending June 2012 there were 29,513 selected violent offences that involved a knife or sharp instrument. This was 7% of the total number of the selected violent offences, a similar proportion to previous years. The number of knife offences recorded was 9% lower than in the preceding year.
The majority of offences involving a knife or sharp instrument are robbery of actual bodily harm/grievous bodily harm offences. There was an 8% decrease in the number of robbery offences involving the use of a knife or sharp instrument , while the number of ABH and GBH offences involving the use of a knife or sharp instrument, fell by 10%.
The largest proportionate fall was in the recorded number of rapes, sexual assaults and homicides that involved the use of a knife increased in the year to June 2012. Due to the relatively low number of these offences care should be taken when comparing these figures over time

Re: Letter-theft postie in suspended jail term
The vast majority of violent crime is peer on peer violence involving young men and alcohol.
If you could take the "did you spill my pint/are you looking at my bird?" mentality out of the young British male we would be a reasonably civilised bunch.

Well it also said that knife crime could be anywhere between 28k and 55k but the data is inaccurate - so my point is there is far more violent crime than is statistically reported simply because the date isn't accurate.clashcityrocker wrote:In front of which town hall should we congregate?
