QUESTION RE PREPPING WALK

Got in the office about 7:00am this morning, sorting the mail etc. I'm part time, the hours on my contract 9:00am - 2:00pm. Just wondering each morning will I have to come and sort this mail out for my route? Or (if I'm my contract says 9 come in at 8) the mail will be sorted, then leave and well... deliver it?

Not really sure about whats happening. Worked almost 6 and a half hours today, even though my contract says only around 5 per day.

I dont really understand, youre supposed to start at 9 but you came in at 7 ? why is that ? Why are you working over your hours ????

WORK YOUR TIME _9-2 and thats it .Its not for you to make sure its finished or preped, thats what managers are there for ....Little advice ..tomorrow come in on time ..if you can tell you cant complete ,,TELL YOUR MANAGER and say you will be finishing to your contract ...if he moans see the rep ...ITS YOUR RIGHT ..dont be bullied . BUT YOU MUST TELL HIM BEFORE YOU GO OUT .

Hes a brand new starter so might have been leant on by the DOM. But Martin whatever you do - do not work when they are not paying you. If you worked 6.5 hours today make sure you get paid 6.5 + meal break.

As to the other question you need guidance from your union rep (even if not in union) about what your duties are, and get it in writing from DOM at same time.

1 rule of thumb is do not come in early unless you are being paid to come in early.

The trainer guy said for the 5 training days could I come in early just to actually experience the actual sorting of the mail. Mailny becuase most people have left the office by 9am.

I can understand why you would do this but you are using your own time and should be paid those hours.

Get a form from your rep tomorrow, or have a look at the thread on union membership TBT has put up.
Make sure you book overtime. You aren't a charity worker and Royal Mail certainly isn't Oxfam.

If you're on one of the new fangled 25 hour contracts, 5 hours a day is it.

You should be just walking into a frame already prepped, so you can do redirections, and bag up. Then take the mail out after a 20 min break. 20 min conveyance. 3.5 hour delivery.

They are taking advantage of these lower contracts because they know you'll want to work more hours to make up the wage. But your contract is for that above. (With other bits I can't remember :D)

Claim OT for any hours before 09:00. If you have to do any prep you can either clain extended if you deliver beyond 14:00 or cut off and finish on your time. Also remember to take your break, for that contract I think you will be on 20 mins - what does it say in your contract?

Your " trainer guy " should make sure that you get paid for the extra hours he has asked you to perform, if he does'nt he needs a size ten boot up the arse for even asking you.

When I started, they asked me to come in early so I could get an idea of "how it all works". They didn't mention anything about paying me overtime, and to be honest I was a bit shy, and didn't say anything. However, I got paid for it and the managers started coming around regularly to make sure I was doing OK, reminding me to claim overtime if i had to etc. From what I've been reading on the forums here, I've been thinking that alls not as bad as it seems.... maybe like with shops... people only write when theres something to complain about.. the good guys rarely get a mention.
