A FORMER Post Office worker breathed in deadly asbestos spores during mail collections at Southampton Docks, an inquest heard.

Malcolm Roshier, 77, of Summit Way, Midanbury, was a delivery driver for the Post Office and would collect mailbags contaminated with asbestos fibres from ships carrying the dangerous material.

He worked for the firm until 1972 and Mr Roshier was in good health before he deteriorated in 2006. Mr Roshier died in October last year.

Pathologist Dr Norman Carr, from Southampton General Hospital, said Mr Roshier suffered from malignant mesothelioma that affected the chest cavity.

Southampton coroner Keith Wiseman recorded a verdict of death by industrial disease.

Very sad indeed....i can relate to this..and fear that i might be in a similar situation to this gentleman in years to come as i been exposed to Asbestos during my days in the building trade many a year ago....it was at the Greenwich naval docks in the late 80's early 90's...was sent down to do some electrical work...had to remove insulation from various pipes in one particular tower....nobody warned me about the fact the stuff i was removing contained blue asbestos...(i was a teenager)..no mask or protection whatsoever......The Navy hierarchy must have got wind of the what was happening....within hours the place was shut down....all windows in the tower sealed up..as were all other exits....and me and my older and more 'wiser' work 'mate'(who was a tool)...are sent back to base..cover up?
I now fear the future especially for my kids as i know this thing takes time to show up (as my colleague at the time said ..'you'll already be dead before this affects you as it takes years to show up''..easy for him to say as he was not exposed to this blue asbestos....would love to know if our union could give me some help on this one.
