What's a jack?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

The Elf' and Safety gone mad myth is wrongly blamed on the "nanny state" or those "nutters at the EU".krussel wrote:Yeah i do agree with you and your right we do live in a nanny state.
The truth is it's driven by insurance companies and pure greed.
You can trace the change in practice right back to the mid eighties when huge American claims on asbestos, pollution and health hazard policies, almost dragged the Lloyd's of London market under....remember that?
Unless a company wants to pay sky high premiums or take the chance of covering it's own liabilities it has to more or less eliminate risk entirely from the equation.

It's easy. Loosen nuts, jack car up,swap wheel, put nuts on, lower jack, tighten nuts, put crap away and wash hands.
As opposed to. Panic, ring office, ring RAC because there's no one in the office,Wait two hours for RAC to come, act all sheepish while he's changing it because he's a man and you're not,Cut off and take all the mail your custoner has paid for back to the office.
Or. Panic . Ring your Mum to come and do it.
Just MTFU.
Would not waste my time waiting for someone else to change a tyre on a combo or transit

Re: Changing wheel
It's all down to torque settings on the wheel nuts, the new manuals for cars state that if you change a wheel, you should go to the nearest garage/tyre fitters to have the wheel nut torque settings checked.

Re: Changing wheel
That's more down to manufacturers' legal arse-covering than any technical reasoning. Even with the supplied monkey-metal wheel brace it's easy to get sufficient torque on the nuts.

Re: Changing wheel
When ever I changed a wheel the last thing I did on each wheel was to press the brace down with my foot. Not sure if this is technically the correct thing to do but I was trained to do it in the forces. However, we also had to inform MT when returning it, and to log it in the vehicles log book as well.

Re: Changing wheel
I think it's more to do with over tightening and stripping threads, than "legal arse", it's also about every bolt being tightened the same amount, you can't do that with a wheel brace.Tman wrote:That's more down to manufacturers' legal arse-covering than any technical reasoning. Besides once you have removed a factory fitted, dealer checked wheel yourself, the manufacturer/dealer is legally absolved of responsibility.
I expect the vans will start coming with re-inflation foam soon anyway, which will end the argument.

Re: Changing wheel
You won't strip those threads with the supplied wheel-brace, (unless you fit a scaffold pole on the end) and that's why they're the size (length) they are.
Unless you're a complete mechanical f*ck-wit it's relatively easy to get all four/five nuts within the same range of torque settings, too. People the World over have been successfully changing wheels for themselves since the concept of a bolted spare was introduced, but I've never been aware of stripped threads/wheels flying off as being any sort of problem, have you?

Re: Changing wheel
What it comes down to is nothing to do with torque wrenches or wheels flying off.
It's down to what the business position is.
Changing wheels is covered by the minor repairs section of BT2010 and the subsequent agreement specific to minor repairs in delivery.

Drivers will also be required to carry out minor vehicle repairs/maintenance tasks where necessary which are jointly agreed as suitable for a trained driver to carry out (e.g. replace bulbs, top up fluids/oil/water, replace wiper blades, change wheels).
The bottom line is you should have training and the final decision on whether to change the wheel or not is...yours.During the Minor Repair pilot, and beyond, the business will be seeking volunteers to complete the training and undertake minor repair tasks. However, even after training the agreement makes it clear that the OPG will make the final decision whether to tackle a minor repair or not.

Re: Changing wheel
Seems pretty fair and unequivocal to me, but I was replying to the posting alleging possible technical reasons for not changing a wheel.

Re: Changing wheel
I agree, using a wheel brace properly you should not be able to strip threads, but as one person has already stated in this thread, tightening with the foot, is not recommended, personally I would love to see get four wheels within 5 newtons of each other tightening by hand, if it was that easy to tighten them equally why do all tyre fitters now use a torque wrench.Tman wrote:You won't strip those threads with the supplied wheel-brace, (unless you fit a scaffold pole on the end) and that's why they're the size (length) they are.

Point 2, All training should be done to manufacturers spec, and manufacturers spec these days is to get wheel nuts checked with a torque wrench after changing wheels, well thats what it says in my Fiesta manual anyway.
