Postman dumped 'junk mail' in drain

INSTEAD of delivering junk mail a Portadown man put it into a drain, Craigavon Magistrates Court heard on Wednesday.



Twenty five year old Dwayne Pio Marley, of Derrylettiff Road, Portadown, admitted that while working as a postal operator he delayed a postal packet.

He faced three charges which happened between September 19, 2010 and September 1, 2011.

The case had been adjourned from a previous court so that a pre-sentence report could be obtained.

On Wednesday his solicitor said that the report indicated Marley was suitable for community service but this had been overtaken by events as he was involved in a road traffic collision on Saturday and his arm was in plaster.

The court heard that in May last year mail had been recovered from a drain. It was in poor condition so had been there for a substantial length of time.

The defendant’s solicitor said this was junk mail of advertisements for businesses or flyers and not bills or statements.

He said Marley understood he should have delivered them but he had been told by people that they ‘did not want that old crap’.

It was supposed to be returned and sent out again but Marley dumped the items. He had since lost his job with the Royal Mail.

District Judge, Mr Alan White, said that although it was junk mail it was no excuse because businesses were paying for it to be delivered.

But he felt he could deal with the matter by way of fines and fined Marley £100 on each charge.
