Letter - a written or printed form of communication. (Generally well received by customers)
Junk mail - unsolicited commercial mail, advertisements & flyers. (Generally not well received by customers)

We are told that the number of letters sent has dropped. I agree.
But it's obvious that the amount of junk mail has increased.

I'm not saying there is a fall in mail.

must be tough on the walks now
when i was a walkman in the 80s
most of us would only have 1 pouch , the odd one would have a drop bag
in the house about 9 for a 2 hour breakfast break
back at 11 for the handful of stamped mail
drive round for 20 minutes
and back in the house before 12
it was a hard life

The decline in mail is a myth as well as a truth.

The overall volume of mail has declined . Maybe D2D's have increased. Probably still would not match the decline.

What has changed is where you deliver. So, if your walk has increased over the 'mail declining' years. What is the upshot?

You deliver more mail as the expanse of you walk has grown. Your workload has increased but mail has 'decreased'

RM therefore are correct .. but realality is different.

BTW: I'm sure that somewhere I read something from Moya that agreed with me.

And that also is a delivery-centric viewpoint.
The decline in letters is almost certainly more evident in a Mail Centre.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Would not disagrre with that at all.

The point being that if you expand walks to 'handle' the decline (and of course expand them overly) then in the Posties eyes they are not delivering a reduced amount. So, the decline is negated.

The reduction in mail volumes is only part of the equation. If I have one letter (or D2D ) for a house , I have to go there. If I have 10 letters I have to go there.

I actually don't care anymore as my time is worked (I might do a bit of OT but minimal) and I cut as necessary.

Unless your call rate goes down, then you're still delivering to the same or more houses. Doesn't matter wether you go up with 1 letter or 5 letters, it takes roughly the same amount of time to do the delivery.

Funnily enough that's exactly the argument managers used when volumes were increasing during the "boom" period.
You don't hear it mentioned much now.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Exactly, right-wing bullshit, we should fight this to the end. Mis-information and downright lies.

What will happen if we get privatised? Either of these 2 scenarios, we will have our wages drop:

Scenario 1, worst case: We will be forced to take a wage cut to £7.50 an hour would be my estimate based on other companies. If we don't do this we will have a certain time period to get out, e.g. 90 days.

Scenario 2, best case: They will freeze all wages of people currently emplyed at higher rate. Newbies will be brought in at lower rate of £7.50. they will try and 'gradually phase out' the people on higher money, as in the way they are trying to screw over all the people currently on decent permanent contracts at the moment.

Either way we're screwed. f**k the Tories. Right wing pigs. All this so that a bunch of fat cats at the top can cream off the profits, while us lot at the bottom go home with less pay and live our lives much worse off. Classic Tory politics. Make the majority poorer, make a minority richer.
spot on,the tories have been wanting us privatised for years but the thing is a lot of their voters stay in the countryside and they would be the ones to get a worse service and as for the letters in decline what a joke if they told you it was raining you would go outside and check.
While I've got no time for the Tories, let's not forget that it was Blair's Labour government, and that great working-class socialist and man of the people - Mandelson, who first tried to privatise RM. Even Thatcher fought shy of privatisiing the Post Office. it was also Blair who opened up the UK postal market to competition years before he needed to.

I just get told to leave all the packets as I cannot manage the decline in mail volumes on a day to day basis neither can the rest of us all!.

Fair point mate, Labour have gone more over to the middle in recent years, especially under Blair as you said. I they can move a bit back over to the left I feel they will be in a prime position to mop up voters for the next election, so long as they don't make Britiain the soft touch of the world again.
