A man has pleaded guilty to a string of offences which happened within hours of each other

A 43-YEAR-OLD man who threatened a postman has pleaded guilty to a string of offences.
On February 7 Peter Chaloner attacked a manager at the Co-op store in St Johns Avenue, Churchdown,.
He grabbed the man around the neck.
After leaving the shop, he threatened a postman, Stephen Voyce, as he was doing his round.
The postman was so scared he asked a member of the public to accompany him on the round.
Chaloner returned shortly afterwards and walked after Mr Voyce while brandishing a knife and fork, so the postman took refuge in a doctor's surgery.
Chaloner, of St Johns Avenue, Churchdown, then went home, where he was arrested by the police. Officers found cannabis at the property.
He appeared at Cheltenham Magistrates' Court yesterday and admitted charges of assault, using threatening and abusive language, possession of a knife in a public area, and possession of Cannabis.
He was released on conditional bail until he is sentenced at the same court on March 28.

Being released on bail is bad enough, it's the inevitable pathetic sentence that will be truly troubling. Wouldn't be surprised if it was suspended sentence or community service.

The real problem in this country with regards to law and order, is too much emphasis on rehabilitation and not enough on punishing the scumbags.

There are two problems with a purely punitive sentencing regime.UnhappyGremlin wrote:The real problem in this country with regards to law and order, is too much emphasis on rehabilitation and not enough on punishing the scumbags.
1) There is absolutely no evidence to support the assertion that it serves as a deterrent, the USA has one of the most punitive sentencing regimes and one of the worst re-offending rates.
2) The cost both financial and social of building and running the many more prisons we need to cope with longer sentencing.
Everybody wants more prisons but nobody wants to pay for them or have one on their doorstep.
The real problem in this country is that it is pretty much morally bankrupt.

Yes it is. And only getting worse. And most who do the offending aren't punished, so do it again. At least if they're in jail they can't mug grannies. They should be punished first, for say 80% of their sentence, and then rehabilitated for the remaining 20%.fishtank wrote:There are two problems with a purely punitive sentencing regime.UnhappyGremlin wrote:The real problem in this country with regards to law and order, is too much emphasis on rehabilitation and not enough on punishing the scumbags.

As for point 1), there is probably no evidence that it doesn't prove a deterrent to some, and there is always going to be a section of people that would commit offences no matter what punishment would be the result. To quote Michael Caine as Alfred (The Dark Knight) "Some men just want to watch the world burn". Doesn't mean they should be allowed to pour the petrol and light it. Or imprisoned to prevent it happening again in the near furture.

Re: A man has pleaded guilty to threatening a Postman
The pitchfork suggestion was a joke,I know something about it, an innocent postman trying to do his job was threatened and was that upset he needed help, not once have you enquired about him or how he is doing, your father shouldn't be on the streets to frighten people.sheriannchal wrote:Don't really see how anyone can comment on this when they know nothing about it? To whoever suggested it was a pitchfork it was not. It was a meat carving set. My father did not know what he was doing as he is mentally unstable. I tried everything I could to get him psychiatric help I spoke to numerous police doctors paramedics social workers psychiatrists etc to try to prevent harm coming to himself or others but I was basically told they wouldn't do anything until something happened. This happened and they released him on bail (they still didn't get him any help for some bizarre reason) he then didn't go to the next court date as he didn't even know what month it was let alone day. He's now in prison to the best of my knowledge - where I hope they give him adequate psychiatric help. Btw prison aint a punishment - u get somewhere to live, food, tv, xbox, books, for my dad this will be a drastically better lifestyle.

Thatchers to blame for everything, the peasants revolt, dissolution of the monasteries, the plague, highland clearances and jack the ripper, to name but a few.
