ANGER AS MARYPORT SORTING OFFICE FACES CLOSURE THREAT

Plans are being considered to close Maryport’s mail sorting office.

It means that townsfolk and people living in nearby villages may be forced to travel to Workington to pick up undelivered mail and parcels.

If the proposal goes ahead, 23 workers would be transferred from the Solway Industrial Trading Estate depot to an expanded unit at Workington’s Derwent Howe.

Royal Mail said last night that its review of delivery options in Maryport was at the beginning and no decisions had been made.

Spokeswoman Felicity MacFarlane said that declining letter numbers and increasing parcel volumes meant the company needed to constantly review how it managed its operations.

She added: “As part of our business-wide transformation, we are undertaking one of the biggest modernisation programmes in UK industry.

“The consolidation of our delivery operations is a commercial decision and will play a major part in placing the business on a stable footing for the future.”

A decision is likely to be made later this year.

Ms McFarlane said there would be no public consultation as it was a commercial decision.

But, she added, it will carry out a study and have discussions with unions that represent workers at the site.

Staff, unions and the Royal Mail have now entered into a 12-week review, said Dean Ferguson, area delivery representative for the Communications Workers Union.

He said: “We only heard about this on Friday and we need to know more.

“We have been told, though, that all jobs are safe.”

Maryport mayor Peter Kendall said he was shocked by Royal Mail’s proposal to move the sorting office.

He added: “It’s complete nonsense.

“The delivery office is well used, not only by people picking up undelivered parcels but by many local businesses who wanted their mail early in the day.”

Coun Kendall said that Maryport, the second largest town in the Allerdale council district, was being shabbily treated.

He said: “We have a population of around 16,000 people here. Why should they have to go to Workington to get a decent service?

"As a council, we will be trying our best to stop this idea from ever coming to fruition.”

It was revealed last month that Maryport’s Job Centre would close in June.

Meanwhile, Sean Parnaby, managing director of town windows and doors firm West Port, said he was being offered a new site at Lillyhall, Workington, because new premises could not be found in Maryport for his business to expand.

The future of Maryport’s town hall and police station is also uncertain.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

So RM say 'no decisions had been made' and then McFarlane says' it was a commercial decision' so there'll be 'no public consultation'..

Is it just the way I'm reading it? / sameold sameold..

Town sorting office saved from closure

Maryport's postal sorting office has been saved from the threat of closure.

Royal Mail revealed last night that it had decided not to go ahead with a transfer of staff to an expanded sorting office in Workington.

Bob Storey, Royal Mail delivery director, said: “After careful consideration of the key areas involved, a full assessment has been made and we have decided that a merger of the two delivery offices will not progress.

“Providing a consistent and high quality service to our customers in Maryport will continue to be our top priority.”

He said the plans were withdrawn because the move would have a negative effect on mail operations in the Carlisle postal area.

There was an outcry in Maryport when the plan to shut the Solway Industrial Estate depot was revealed.

It would have seen 23 workers transferred to Workington’s Derwent Howe and townsfolk having to travel to Workington to pick up undelivered mail and parcels.

Royal Mail had blamed declining mail volumes and the need to operate efficiently.

A 12-week review was launched with staff and unions.

Peter Kendall, Maryport mayor, said: “With all the closures in Maryport over the past 12 months this is the best news we have had.

“It is nice to see that the Royal Mail has looked at this and that common sense has prevailed.

“We have a population of around 16,000 people here. Why should they have to go to Workington to get a decent service?”

It was revealed in January that Maryport’s JobCentre would close in June.

Meanwhile, Sean Parnaby, managing director of town windows and doors firm West Port, said he was being offered a new site at Lillyhall, Workington, because new premises could not be found in Maryport for his business to expand.

The future of Maryport’s town hall and police station is also uncertain.
