Re: The importance of next weeks policy forum
Dvbuk it was hardly surprising that Dave speech did not galvanise support at the meeting especially as 95% of the meeting was managers. The union were not there in the same numbers as the last time and a lot gave it a swerve.
The DOMs and senior managers I spoke to on Monday were shocked by Dave's speech and Moya changed her speech at lunch and her auto que kept on flashing up off message as she responded to Dave. Of course yesterday it did come as such a shock to those who heard it on Monday.

Why do you think they swerved it dingo - not interested? I presume those who did go were already committed to the cause anyway.dingo wrote:Dvbuk it was hardly surprising that Dave speech did not galvanise support at the meeting especially as 95% of the meeting was managers. Machinable items would get their barcodes scanned by the sorting machine (either just a software upgrade or new hardware installed), manual stuff and stuff where the machines can't read the barcode would be dealt with by someone with a pda.midegarelu wrote:britwrit wrote:Just from... well, a completely uninformed standpoint... won't putting bar codes on everything eat up time? Sure, it only takes a second to scan in one parcel but add those seconds up....
How much time is eaten up by a Packet (oops PARCEL) passing under a scanner on a conveyor belt which then sorts it according to the instructions on the bar-code,
as opposed to us manually trying to de-cipher a cryptic address and then giving up and throwing in the nearest sleeve!
Deliveries voted BT2010 in as there ware way more delivery staff then there are MC staff.
Yeah - that's what I was wondering about. At HWDC out near Heathrow, all the specials and Airsure items are scanned in manually and then thrown into the appropriate bag. Is there a PSM in any mail centre today that could do this for mech parcels?

Re: The importance of next weeks policy forum
Why quite a few did not go was it is very staged managed and we have a policy forum next week and people did not want to travel early yo Birmingham and then get back late at night when they could had things to do in representing members. I really only went as I knew Dave was going to call it on and I had a seperate meeting prior to the start.

Re: The importance of next weeks policy forum
The Eastern Region runs from York to Norwich and includes North and East London so yes we have to meet managers outside of London often in the midlands.
Now Dvbuk this was a Royal Mail event and the CWU were invited and Dave Ward was given an opportunity to speak. Unlike the managers he spoke without his words coming from an auto quo which had been planned on Sunday night.
so whilst the event was very staged managed from Royal Mail presenters including Mark Higson! Steve Cameron , Moya , Mark Fellows and nick Langdon it was far from it from the CWU .

I think that less then a handfull of MCs have the packet sorting machines, most MCs would probably have to move to new builds to have room to have onebritwrit wrote:Yeah - that's what I was wondering about. Managers have been pulled out of their normal jobs to build a 3 years plan on packet automation, the stream is all ready in place on the IWT.

That could mean that many existing MCs might close and move to new builds to make room for PSMs (and probably for FSMs as well), possibly merging with other MCs at the same timewhatamess!! wrote:Managers have been pulled out of their normal jobs to build a 3 years plan on packet automation, the stream is all ready in place on the IWT.

Yeah. I absolutely don't want us to go private but if we do, why not just concentrate on hoovering up the low to medium end of the parcels market? Yes, provide and expand tracking to First Class packages but such a capital outlay on tracking everything seems risky.

Re: The importance of next weeks policy forum
Dont forget many of these managers belong to unions and they know full well that the initial cull by a private entity will more than likely come down their way, so I would imagine that underneath, they support someone who could possibly save their skins indirectly, but very unlikely.

Royal Mail have nixed that idea straight away by increasing the price of medium size parcels (Ebay in melt down about it) from Aprilbritwrit wrote:Yeah. Unless of course its part of a Master Plan to show why privatisation is working when it happens. So if you were a private seller wanting to sell a bundle of kids clothes by 2nd class weighing, say, 749g, it would cost £2.70 to do so today, and £5.20 to do so from 2nd April.
