A POSTAL worker was accused of theft after £900 which had been planted in a test package by suspicious Royal Mail staff went missing, a court has heard.

The package, containing £975, was taken to the special delivery area at the Ipswich sorting office where Julian Green was working, after it was noticed that some special delivery items had gone missing, Ipswich Crown Court was told.

After the envelope containing the money was left with Green he allegedly took it to a walk-in safe and when he came out it appeared the envelope had been tampered with, Adrian Chaplin, prosecuting, said.

When the envelope was examined by investigators who had been covertly monitoring the special delivery area the £975 was missing and it had never been recovered, Mr Chaplin said.

“The prosecution can’t say what Green did with those notes,” said Mr Chaplin.

Green, of Prittlewell Close, Ipswich, has denied stealing £975 from the Royal Mail on August 12, 2010, and converting criminal property in 2009.

Mr Chaplin said that when Green was interviewed about the missing £975 he accepted that as the envelope did not have an Ipswich postcode he would normally have put it in a special area for “mis-sorted post” and could not explain why he had not.

He was also unable to explain why he had taken the envelope containing the money into the walk-in safe.

Mr Chaplin said the converting criminal property charge related to 24,100 Mauritian rupees worth between £472 and £500 which had been sent by special delivery to a customer but had never been received by her.

The package containing the foreign money was shown as coming into the Ipswich sorting office on September 16 2009 and was also recorded on an internal system as being delivered even though it was not.

It was later discovered that 24,100 Mauritian rupees had been paid into a bank account in the name of Green’s father which was an account for which Green had a power of attorney, said Mr Collins.

He alleged it wasn’t a coincidence that the exact amount of money that had gone missing from the special delivery package had been paid into Green’s father’s bank account.

The trial which is expected to last the rest of this week continues.

Ipswich: Accused postal worker described as honest by colleagues

A POSTAL worker who was accused of theft after £975 which had been planted in a test package by suspicious Royal Mail staff went missing, has been described by a colleague as “professional, hardworking and honest”.

Giving evidence on the second day of the trial of 54-year-old Julian Green, postman Adam Ward who worked at the Ipswich sorting office in Commercial Road, agreed with defence counsel Richard Kelly that Green had worked for Royal Mail for a number of years and was a well respected member of staff.

Green, of Prittlewell Close, Ipswich has denied stealing £975 from Royal Mail on August 12 2010 and converting criminal property in 2009.

The court has heard that a test package, containing £975, was taken to the special delivery area at the Ipswich sorting office where Julian Green was working, after it was noticed that some special delivery items had gone missing.

He said the converting criminal property charge related to 24,100 Mauritian rupees worth between £472 and £500 which had been sent by special delivery to a customer but had never been received.

It was later discovered that 24,100 Mauritian rupees had been paid into a bank account in the name of Green’s father which was an account for which Green had a power of attorney, said Mr Chaplin.

Michael Bunn a disribution manager at the Ipswich sorting office told the court he had been asked by a Royal Mail investigator to take a bag containing the test package to the area where Green was working.

He had later been asked to collect the package and noticed it has been opened.

Cross-examined by Mr Kelly Mr Bunn said he had known Green for more than 20 years and agreed he was long standing and respected member of staff.

The trial, which is expected to last the rest of this week, continues today.

Ipswich: Accused postal work claims it ‘isn’t in his nature’ to be dishonest

A POSTAL worker who was accused of theft after £975 which had been planted in a test package by suspicious Royal Mail staff went missing has denied being responsible for taking the missing money.

Julian Green told a jury at Ipswich Crown Court that it wasn’t in his nature to be dishonest and that even if he had been tempted to steal mail he wouldn’t have done so under the nose of Royal Mail investigators who he knew were working at the Ipswich sorting office on the day in question.

Green has also denied that £500 worth of foreign currency that had been exchanged and paid into his father’s bank account had come from a special delivery package that was never received by a customer. Green’s sister claimed she had sent the money over for her father after she was forced to cancel a holiday.

During the trial the court heard from a number of Green’s colleagues who described him as “hardworking and honest”.

The jury was sent out to consider its verdicts yesterday afternoon.

Ipswich: Postal worker guilty of theft

http://www.eadt.co.uk/news/ipswich_post ... _1_1971961" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

AN Ipswich postal worker who stole £975 which had been planted in a test package by suspicious Royal Mail staff has been warned he faces a prison sentence.

Julian Green, 54, of Prittlewell Close, Ipswich had denied stealing £975 from the Royal Mail on August 12 2010 and converting criminal property in 2009 but was found guilty of both charges after a week long trial at Ipswich Crown Court

Adjourning sentence until March 27 for a pre-sentence report from the probation service, Recorder Craig Ferguson told Green the offences were a “serious breach of trust” and he faced a “very real risk” of a prison term being imposed when he is sentenced later this month.

During his trial Green told the court that it wasn’t in his nature to be dishonest and that even if he had been tempted to steal mail he wouldn’t have done so under the nose of Royal Mail investigators, who he knew were working at the Ipswich sorting office on the day in question.

Green denied that £500 worth of foreign currency that had been exchanged and paid into his father’s bank account had come from a special delivery package that was never received by a customer.

Green’s sister told the court that she had sent the money over for her father after she was forced to cancel a holiday.

How would he know Royal Mail investigators would be at his office on the day in question? I'm sure it wouldn't be common knowledge

In my office we usually know when they're about, they're the ones that walk round like they own the place, whilst looking at postman like they are pieces of s**t.

Having said that, I would still find it unlikely that if they are carrying out an covert operation to catch someone, it wouldn't be likely that they would announce their presence/allow themselves to be seen prior to the 'arrest' being made. The manager may not necessarily know they're in the building. They have there own separate entrances.

Ipswich: Postal worker jailed after theft

http://www.eadt.co.uk/news/ipswich_post ... _1_1997919" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A FORMER postal worker who stole nearly £1,000 from special delivery mail has been jailed for eight months.

Sentencing Julian Green, of Prittlewell Close, Ipswich, Recorder Craig Ferguson said: “Such crimes by postal workers undermine public confidence in the Royal Mail.

“A high degree of trust was reposed in you.”

The judge also told the 54-year-old that stealing £975 which had been planted in a test package by suspicious Royal Mail staff was “brazen”, as he knew investigators were in the postal centre at the time.

During his Ipswich Crown Court trial Green denied stealing £975 from the Royal Mail on August 12, 2010, and converting criminal property in 2009.

However, he was found guilty of both charges.

Green had told the court that it wasn’t in his nature to be dishonest and that even if he had been tempted to steal mail he wouldn’t have done so under the nose of Royal Mail investigators, who he knew were working at the Ipswich sorting office on the day in question.

Green denied that £500 worth of Mauritian Rupees which had been exchanged in 2009, and paid into his father’s bank account over which he had power of attorney, had come from a special delivery package that was never received by a customer.

The case had been intended as honeymoon spending money for a bride.

Green’s sister told the court she had sent the money over for her father after she was forced to cancel a holiday.

The court was told a test package, containing £975, had been taken to the special delivery area at the Ipswich sorting office where Green was working.

After the envelope was left with Green he took it to a walk-in safe and when he came out it appeared the envelope had been tampered with.

When the envelope was examined by investigators the £975 was missing and it was never recovered.

During the trial the court heard from a number of Green’s colleagues who described him as “hard-working and honest”.

Green had been employed by the Royal Mail in Ipswich for more than 20 years. During that time he had also worked as a postman and delivery worker.

At least he got jail time, although he'll be out in 4 months. The last few cases with news stories posted on RMC all seem to have avoided jail. :evil/mad

Sounds daft to suggest that's the only reason but it wouldn't surprise me.
