MASKED robbers stole a Royal Mail van while the driver collected mail from a postbox.
Two men dressed in black tracksuits approached the driver at the junction of Grafton Street and Horsfall Street in Dingle at around 5.50pm yesterday.
They took the keys before driving off in the vehicle.
A huge police hunt was launched last night and the Merseyside Police helicopter was scrambled.
Police officers from the area were also sent out to search for the van.
It was found abandoned in nearby Harlow Street around 10 minutes later.
A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: “It is understood that two males, dressed in black tracksuits and wearing masks, approached the driver while he was collecting mail from a postbox, took the keys and drove off in the van.
“The search for the offenders is ongoing.
“An investigation to establish the full circumstances of the incident is under way.”
The driver was not injured but was said to be shaken following the incident.
Last night police were still searching for the two men. It was unclear whether any post was stolen from the van.
Forensics teams checked the van at the scene before it was removed for further examination.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or saw men matching the description in the area around the time of the incident is asked on contact Merseyside Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
A spokesman for Royal Mail was unable to comment today.

Why would he be sacked? The gist I got in the story was that they approached the driver, took the keys from him and then drove off in the van-not that he'd left the keys in the ignition and engine running?maisymoo04 wrote:Royal Mail didn't need to comment SACKED sorry

INVESTIGATIONS into the robbery of a Royal Mail delivery van were continuing today.
The van was stolen on Monday evening after two men dressed in black tracksuits and wearing masks approached a Royal Mail driver at the junction of Grafton Street and Horsfall Street, in Dingle, just before 6pm.
They took the keys before driving off in the vehicle. The van was found abandoned about 10 minutes later in nearby Harlow Street.
Royal Mail spokesperson Val Bodden said: “Our investigations continue into the amount of mail missing from the stolen van.”
She added: “We are working with the police to investigate this incident, and we would ask anyone with information to contact them.
“If any customers have any concerns, please contact our customer service team on 08457 740 740.”
It is thought the incident could lead to delays in deliveries for some customers.
Anyone with information should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Masked men steal Royal Mail van in Dingle
Given a choice of handing over the van keys or getting a kicking? Can anyone seriously say they would take a kicking (or worse - they could have had a knife or whatever), and still had the van stolen? Not me. Yes, we should protect the integrity of the mail when we can. But not at a personal, physical cost. My life and wellbeing trump a van and it's contents anyday.TeeferTiger wrote:Why would he be sacked? I'm pretty sure RM's security guideline things say you should hand the mail over anyway... whether they'll remember that when giving the poor guy a b*ll*cking is another matter!UnhappyGremlin wrote:Given a choice of handing over the van keys or getting a kicking? Re: Masked men steal Royal Mail van in Dingle
I would say not. I would be concerned that the driver would be suspected of being 'an inside man'. Some may say it would be far fetched to suggest that RM wouldn't believe what the driver said happened, but even if they are believed, they would probably be watched for a while. They are suspicious b******s. And in the current climate....TeeferTiger wrote:I'm pretty sure RM's security guideline things say you should hand the mail over anyway... whether they'll remember that when giving the poor guy a b*ll*cking is another matter!UnhappyGremlin wrote:Given a choice of handing over the van keys or getting a kicking? Street viewed the area, it does look dodgy and the post box is in an isolated spot.
