ROYAL Mail is being asked to deliver on a promise it made two years ago to a far north construction firm.
Green & Cameron has waited increasingly impatiently for a new larger postbox which it requires to accommodate its daily outgoing mail.
Eighteen months on, it is still having to make do with the too-small box near its base in Lower Gills, Canisbay.
As a result of the lack of action, staff have to place mail that is too big on top of the box in a bag held down by a brick.
The company also sends brochures on a regular basis, with staff forced to make the 10-mile round trip to John O’Groats post office to send them as its box is not big enough.
The firm’s managing director David Green said the current box is inadequate not just for the business but for residents as well.
“We’ve been trying to get a new post box for the last four years,” he said. “Almost two years ago, they told me it would be installed within a month but we are still waiting.
“I had even offered to Royal Mail that I would pay for the costs to install a bigger letterbox at the site, but they would not accept my proposal.”
Mr Green added: “I have to ask my secretary to make a 10-mile round trip to John O’Groats to post any large letters or brochures.
“We post a lot of mail, but large letters will just not fit so we set them in a post bag which we place on top of the post box.
“If it is windy, we have to put a brick on top of the postbag so it does not blow away and the secretary has to wait for the mail to be collected to bring the postbag back.
“We don’t like putting the mail on top of the letterbox in case somebody steals it, but we’ve no option. Its obviously an unsatisfactory situation.”
Caithness landward Highland Councillor Willie Mackay sympathises with the construction company’s situation and has called on Royal Mail to make good on its pledge. He said the current set-up is unacceptable.
“This is not practical for a business that wants to get their mail securely on its way and to leave it unattended could see it fall into the wrong hands,” said Mr Mackay. “I will be making fresh calls to Royal Mail in Inverness today to have this box upgraded to accept larger letters such as the popular A4 size as it is so essential for companies like Green and Cameron working from a rural area such as Gills where larger letters are posted daily.”
Royal Mail spokeswoman Jennifer Bird said yesterday: “Royal Mail can confirm that it is our intention to install a replacement postbox in the Lower Gills area.
“Royal Mail would like to apologise to its customers for any inconvenience caused. We will look to address this issue as a matter of urgency.”

Or they could take their large letter along to a proper sized box instead of stuffing them in a tiny box

If you go on google maps you can even see the brick.
Although to be fair that's more of a thingy for the top of a wall thing.
