Peter has been robed Paule has been mugged and poor old johnny cant work any faster Marys little sheep are following the leader to the land of fairy tales and make believe, P and L can only be achieved in DR Whos Tardis. What we really need are porters wearing roller blades, and prepers from the men in black. Or why not have full time staff instead of one man doing the work of three first thing in the morning or is that a bit ga ga.

Exactly, and there in lies half the problem. Somebody else throwing in your walk will not take as much care and will not be as thorough as they would if it was their own walk.

It's human nature.
Also they are more likely to throw in ripped letters or cards into your frame that you won't know about till you get to that address, then you are stuck with a damaged birthday card that you will get blamed for, another point is those bloody window letters(virgin) I always fold a corner over so the address doesn't move how many other people would do that for you.

folding corners of virgin/window envelopes? I just simply write the number of address on them even when throwing out for others. I was kinda pleased when a postie I work with as a cover has now started to do the same - progress :nana

Super sorters/speed sorters whatever you want to call them. Once you identify a segregation in the workforce on capabilities such as that, will you then not create a demand to reintroduce the PHG grade.
Well if you don't give your super sorters an incentive somehow, what will drive them to work faster then anyone else. PHG here we come again :nana

If there is one thing that would make be slow right down, is the threat of being made into a supersorter. Being a porter doesnt sound so bad though. Working in a small office, though, means we dont have to worry about such silly ideas. IPS-Packets-prep- tie up and gone. Simple.

Speed Sorter or no Speed Sorter the rate should be 75Bs !! the recognised performance target for ALL staff on measured work.

Can we not extend this scenario even further, so that the runners do all the delivering and us old plodders sit in a nice warm office and make up the walks. As they run from one walk to the next, one of us could stand at the door and throw them their next bag. Wouldn,t for one minute want to disturb their rhythm. :nana :nana :nana :nana

Is there an 'official' definition of 75B you've mentioned above pls. .. can't even find it on search engine!

But why would you need too throw them there next bag, the next bag would be in their cars. Though you would probably need some one to go round replenishing the cars with extra work, so each D.O would need one official RM vehicle.

Definition of 75Bs (International Labour Office):

“Steady, deliberate, unhurried performance, as of a worker not on piecework but under proper supervision; looks slow, but time is not intentionally being wasted while under observation”

(The under proper supervision is open to interpretation within RM :thumbup )

Using the strongest IPS/packets sorting team on any given day does have its benefits over a system where OPGs on certain walks do specific indoor work, regardless of their ability/strengths. Yes, it does have its weaknesses such as when the "super sorters" are on a day off/ holiday/ sickness, but the positives far outweigh the negatives IMO.

I would not waste indoor time by having the "weakest individuals" throwing in complete walks, their prep rate is likely to be awful when it comes to throwing in the manual items coming off IPS, when compared to the duty holders. In addition, even the "super sorters" will surely have frame prep time after finishing IPS? However, there is no reason why they could not work their way around frames throwing in the sequenced mail and then throwing in the 1/6th D2D afterwards, even killing off deads if they have "spare indoor time."

At my depot the porters often have the worse challenge in terms of gernal indoor work, mainly because there are rarely enough OPGs assigned to portering in the first place according to how it should be done! Even when they were supposed to be covering typically 12 specific walks' mail in the IPS it was organised chaos, but recently it got even worse when the powers that be decided to make things more impossible for porters by expecting them to clear down packet sacks for those walks too (instead of the old system of specific packets porters).

The biggest danger is that the "super sorters" system is used to to effectively lapse indoor time, by doing a few statistically meaningless tests on the prep rates of the super team and then using that to say how many OPGs should be on IPS each day, because of what the "figures" say it coming into a section that day. The odd member of the team here and there does not prep quite as quick as they happened to do during the last test, IPS fails and then you get the pointing fingers about why are you not prepping as quick today...

Given that we are not in a communist system... There should be some incentive for being a super-sorter! Why should anyone work harder for the same money and others can take it easy...

I know some people still work harder on the IPS because they are fast and they want to get on with it - we cannot have complete equality... But having a TAG should lead to payment by performance or at least a bonus system - that is only fair.

thing is that some sorters are faster than others. The same as some walkers are faster than others.
But the DOMs arent interested in how fast you deliver, just how fast they can get you out of the door
