Hi everyone,
i`ve been working for Royal Mail since 2010, i`ve just reached 2 years of employment a few months ago.
i thought i would have been automatically moved to a full time contract or at least a contract that last more than 3 months after 2 years showing that
i care about this job and i would love to be fully employed.
in my opinion seems quite unprofessional that people are kept working in such conditions after such a long time,
i understand that the company needs to save mony etc etc etc, but i also think that people who work hard and professionally should be rewarded for their efforts.
i`ve been told that i should wait 4 years to get a full time contract ( ridicolous.) but i`ve also heard that the agreement of 4 years recently changed to 2 years.
i tried to find out if it`s true, but i can`t find anything about the matter through the RM official site.
Royal Mail is such a big business with a big name, yet , as soon you get inside you can be amazed from how people can be unprofessional, lazy and selfish.
anyway, i hope someone could clear my doubts.
thank you very much.

Re: Full Time Contract
4 years is the law,2 years is an agreement that we have with Royal Mail,Royal Mail are ignoring that agreement, much like most of our agreements, anyway, see this link...

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Hi, check out Employment Rights Act 1996. You'll get this if you just type that into Google. The front page tells you what employers are obliged to provide to their employees. Regarding the four year rule before you are provided a permanent contract, that is a lot o nonsense.

Not trying to be difficult but you say its nonsense but don't say if its nonsense because we have a collective agreement in place, or that the law has changed and the 4 year rule is defunct.
As I understand the 4 year rule is still current, and the 2 year collective agreement as far as I know is still in place just that ists not being honoured.
Also haven't various parts of the ERA 1996 act been replaced in large part by the Employment Acts 2002, 2008 and the Employment rights and the Equality Act 2010, would be helpful if anyone could confirm or deny my understanding as its quite important. How long can an employer keep on renewing a fixed-term contract?
An employee can be kept on successive fixed-term contracts for a limit of four years. If your contract is renewed after that you become a permanent employee. This is unless the employer can show a good reason why you should stay on a fixed-term contract. Only service from 10 July 2002 is counted towards the four-year limit.
The four-year limit was introduced to prevent employers abusing the use of successive fixed-term contracts to limit employees' employment rights. The limit can be changed by employers and employees agreeing a 'workforce' or 'collective' agreement. This agreement should then provide an alternative scheme for preventing the abuse of fixed-term contracts.
Workplace or collective agreements can vary the limit on the length or number of successive contracts used by an employer. They can also limit the use of successive contracts and set a list of reasons to justify renewals of fixed-term contracts.

Re: Full Time Contract
I have had a part-time permanent contract with Royal Mail for 5 years. How do I go about getting a full-time contract and are there any laws which support this upgrade?

No - but see my post in your other thread - no laws broken unless you qualify under discrimination - but it sounds like they have ignored the seniority rule.scildi wrote:I have had a part-time permanent contract with Royal Mail for 5 years.
