Arrest after postmen racially abused

POLICE have made an arrest following allegations of racial abuse towards two postmen, which led to the suspension of postal deliveries in a Harefield road last week.

No post was delivered between Saturday and Wednesday last week in Sullivan Crescent, but the service has now resumed, after a police officer accompanied postmen on Thursday’s delivery.

Royal Mail spokeswoman Sally Hopkins said: “We have taken steps that have enabled us to resume deliveries to addresses in Sullivan Crescent.”

It is believed new postal staff have now been appointed to deliver to the road.

Last week, the Gazette reported how people were having to travel the 14-mile round trip to the sorting office in Uxbridge to collect their post, and some had called for Royal Mail to consider the innocent parties affected.

One wrote to Alison Ray, the manager at Cowley sorting office, suggesting letters could be delivered to a post office five minutes away from Sullivan Crescent, in Northwood Road.

The man – who asked not to be named – also pointed out that the Royal Mail letter informing neighbours of the suspension said a leaflet explaining how to appeal the decision was enclosed, but it was not.

He requested this be sent to him but had yet to get a response by the end of last week.

The person arrested has been bailed pending further enquiries.

If that's a management call and not down to normal operational reasons or the wishes of the two postmen who were racially abused then it's the wrong decision.
