ALLEGED racial abuse and threats to Royal Mail delivery staff have led to the suspension of postal deliveries to more than 50 homes in Harefield.
Every house in Sullivan Crescent received a hand-delivered letter from Royal Mail on Saturday stating all post had been stopped on police advice after one of the people living in the road had allegedly threatened postmen.
People the Gazette has spoken to – none of whom wanted to give their name – are expressing sympathy for the postal worker but feel Royal Mail could have made things easier for the innocent parties affected.
One said: “It seems a funny way of going about it. Can’t they just stop deliveries to the problem house? We’ve all been tarred with it.”
The circumstances of the abuse are unclear but threats were reportedly made on more than one occasion to two members of staff last week.
Another householder said: “I understand if an employee is being abused they can’t ignore it, but there’s a post office five minutes away [in Northwood Road]. Why can’t they deliver it there?
“Why should all the people on the street be punished for the actions of one?”
It is unclear how long the suspension will be in place.
Spokeswoman for Royal Mail, Sally Hopkins said: “We can confirm we have temporarily suspended mail deliveries to addresses in Sullivan Crescent from today (Monday) on the advice of the police.
“We only suspend deliveries if the safety of our postmen and women is at risk. We aim to resume deliveries as soon as it is safe for our people to do so.”
The suspension leaves those living in Sullivan Crescent no choice but to travel the seven miles to the sorting office in Cowley Mill Road, Uxbridge to collect their post.
But with the sorting office operating opening hours that are close to office hours hundreds of people will struggle to collect their post, and the freezing conditions and slippery pavements are not making the situation easier.
The office’s opening hours are 7.30am to 2pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 7.30am to 8pm on Wednesday.
The round-trip to Cowley on public transport involves catching two buses, which take over an hour each way, costing up to £9.60.

It's the way of the (ConDem) world in all areas of societyTrueBlueTerrier wrote: “Why should all the people on the street be punished for the actions of one?”
- someone gets drunk ... all the sensible drinkers have to pay ...
- someone complains about smoke in a pub - all the sensible smokers and pub owners have to pay ...
- someone cons an insurance company (car or house) - other sensible insurance payers have to pay ...
Plenty more examples ... I could go on but ... you get the picture
"We're under model" - oh no we're not - stick your lapse elsewhere ...
