Why not increase the price of postage?

Post by rmware »

Surely the royal mail could just increase the postage, perhaps 34 to 50 for a first class. More money, increased wages, no more strikes.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The cost of stamps is increased with Postcomm's agreement. Last year RM tried to put it up a reasonable amount but it was made to phase it over a couple of years instead of all at once.

This, has also been a contributing factor in our decline in spendable income as fuel costs have increased significantly over the last 5-7yrs and RM are not allowed to raise the costs in line with this due to Postcomm. I'm sure we all know what that means to a business thats already in the RED.
If they cannot increase the cost of services by the cost of living then it makes it rather difficult to increase their out-goings by the cost of living.

We lost our way with PIP - it wasn't anything to do with pricing at all - it was an effort to force customers to use machinable mailings. That was so they release staff - but that is a very long term strategy. Whereas RM can't increase prices as other companies can to recover their increased costs, PIP would just push the price of posting on to the customers and not force them to review their posting arrangements.

We should instead have relinquished the universal service and charged by weight over distance this would have enabled us to set a fair price and recover the increased fuel charges - it would have been easier to justify than PIP which hardly anyone understands and probably costs money to maintain.

Perhaps Postcom should look at the prices competitors charge.

actually PIP has hit the traffic to the Flat Sorting Machines, before PIP were up on traffic for the Top2K but now it can get very quiet. Thing is they have ordered another 20 machines, so not sure who has done the maths if traffic goes down, can only think of possibly using them for walk sorting ?

Has that been because of PIP or because of DSA?

nope IMO PiP, folk are folding items sticking them in C5 rather than large flat. I`m sure there will be some element down to DSA but it was most noticable once PiP came in.
