Homes and businesses left without post as Royal Mail struggles with weather

PEOPLE across Derbyshire have been left without post for days due to the poor weather.
Royal Mail have said they are attempting to make deliveries where it is safe to do so but due to the severe weather in the county over the last few days this has not been possible in some areas.
Andy Darlington, 39, runs Derbyshire food and drink magazine Taste the Seasons from his home in Queen Street, Belper, has had no mail for several days.
He said: "At a time when small businesses are struggling all over the place, it doesn't help one jot if our cheques get stuck in the post.
"The roads in Belper have been gritted and are perfectly clear. Many of the pavements have been cleared of snow by residents.
"To say the postmen can't get through is simply health and safety gone mad."
Royal Mail spokeswoman, Morag Turnbull. said: "We apologise to customers who are experiencing delays to their deliveries in Derbyshire and East Staffordshire as a result of the severe winter weather conditions there.
"A range of measures have been put in place to ensure deliveries reach people as quickly as possible.
"We are doing our utmost to ensure continued deliveries but it may not be possible to do so everywhere because of the weather."
If you have had no mail get in touch on 01332 291 111 and ask for Joey Severn.

Its not just 'clear paths' its working in temperatures of -16 for five hours plus. Also, Point D maybe clear but what about from Point A to D? Maybe he also skipped the news that a colleague lost his life recently.
Maybe more likely he is just an idiot with no concept about what it takes to be a postman.
That cold in the pub writing your blog is it?

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

The ones that moan the most are the ones sat behind their desks all day waiting for the money to roll in.

Snow set to stick around as villages left without post
http://www.thisisderbyshire.co.uk/Snow- ... story.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
SNOW across Derbyshire is expected to stay until at least the weekend, according to the Met Office.
Ice warnings have been issued for the county and people are being warned to take extra care on the roads.
Temperatures today are expected to struggle to get above freezing point.
But Dan Williams, Met Office forecaster, said there would be very little in the way of further snow.
He said: "The snow will be pretty slow to thaw, with maximum temperatures reaching 0C. On Thursday night temperatures will drop to -6C or even -7C.
"Friday and Saturday could see a front pushing from the west bringing unsettled wind and rain.
"Over the weekend there will be warmer conditions. But there is the risk of layers of ice under the snow as it thaws."
Some people across Derbyshire have been left without their post for days due to the poor weather.
Cindy Delaney, 50, of Foundry Lane, Milford, said: "Normally the postman is fantastic but we have had nothing since Thursday.
"I don't really understand why they can't get to me.
"The roads around me are free of ice but the pavements are a little treacherous so I suppose it could be dangerous for them."
Andy Darlington, 39, runs Derbyshire food and drink magazine Taste the Seasons from his home in Queen Street, Belper, which has had no mail for several days.
He said: "At a time when small businesses are struggling, it doesn't help one jot if our cheques get stuck in the post.
"The roads in Belper have been gritted and are perfectly clear. Many of the pavements have been cleared of snow by residents.
"To say the postmen can't get through is simply health and safety gone mad."
Royal Mail said it was attempting to make deliveries where was safe to do so but due to the severe weather over the last few days this had not always been possible.
Spokeswoman Morag Turnbull said: "We apologise to customers who are experiencing delays to their deliveries in Derbyshire and East Staffordshire as a result of the severe winter weather conditions there.
"A range of measures have been put in place to ensure deliveries reach people as quickly as possible.
"We are doing our utmost to ensure continued deliveries but it may not be possible to do so everywhere because of the weather."
The wintry weather has also kept snow wardens in Oakwood busy.
Householders have been helping to spread salt grit during the cold snap as part of the Oakwood Winter Welfare scheme, which offers residents a free bag of grit to help them cope with frozen footpaths and roads.
Councillor Mick Barker said the scheme was proving to be extremely successful.
He said: "Everything is going to plan. We have distributed to more than 100 households.
"Over the weekend period, all three local councillors were out and about in atrocious conditions ensuring those who had applied to take part received their supply.
"In total we have distributed well over 350 bags.
"It's a very positive exercise and is unique to Oakwood.
"We have had many e-mails from residents thanking us for delivering the grit, which is very heartening."
Yesterday police were forced to put a rolling road block in place after dangerous icicles were spotted hanging from a bridge on the A50.
The block kept the carriageway free for contractors from the Highways Agency to safely dislodge the ice from the bridge between junctions 4 and 5 at around 1pm on both the east and westbound carriageways.
And Derby Mountain Rescue team members have been helping district nurses from Staffordshire and Stoke NHS Trust get through treacherous conditions around Burton.
Many rural areas and outlying villages have been impassable and crews from the team stepped in to help transport nurses to patients through the night.
Night Sister Rosemary Young said: "I have worked on the Night Nursing service for 20 years and this is the first time this has happened."

Snow and ice disrupts services across Leicester and Leicestershire
http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/S ... story.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Wintry conditions continued to disrupt refuse collections, some postal services and a handful of schools yesterday.
While major city and county roads were gritted and clear of snow, in some rural areas there were still problems due to ice.
In the south of the county and in parts of Rutland, postal services were disrupted for the second day as the Royal Mail said some outlying areas were too difficult to get to.
Royal Mail spokesman Morag Turnbull apologised and said: "A range of measures have been put in place to ensure deliveries reach people as quickly as possible."
The number of school closures fell dramatically from the 170 affected on Monday.
Two city schools, Ellesmere College and Winstanley Community College, remained closed while half a dozen schools in the county were closed. Nine other county schools were partially open and some started lessons later than normal.
Refuse collections were yesterday suspended in Oadby and Wigston and other councils were operating reduced collections. Charnwood was operating a normal service.
Leicester City Council said it would try to do collections today – but any that were missed would be done on January 30.
The council said its golf courses at Humberstone Heights and Western Park remain closed, as are the sports pitches at St Margaret's Pastures and Aylestone recreation ground.
In Leicester, complaints were received about the safety of paving slabs in the Humberstone Gate East area.
John Richardson, who works for Age UK at Clarence House, in Humberstone Gate East said: "I don't know why the city council has chosen to use such smooth paving stones.
"I saw lots of people, of all ages slipping and sliding about. I found it hazardous. Everybody was complaining about it."
A city council spokesman said: "Snow and ice are making all surfaces slippery so it's important to take extra care.
"Our cleansing team has been gritting priority footways in the city centre and neighbourhood shopping precincts. The team is responding to requests for gritting in specific areas – and has been out today to grit the pavements outside Age UK.
"The area outside Age UK on Humberstone Gate East is paved with unpolished concrete and granite slabs – a product that has been tested and meets British standards for skid resistance in pedestrian areas."
Conservative councillors Bhupendra Dave and Ravendra Thakor complained that East Street car park, in Oadby, had not been gritted and there were not enough grit bins in the area.
A council spokesman said: "The East Street car park was gritted on Monday and again on Tuesday. However, it needs vehicles to use the car park to imbed the grit into the snow."
The spokesman said the provision of grit bins was a county council responsibility, but added people had, in the past, taken the grit to use at home.
The weather is likely to remain cold with the chance of snow flurries today and tomorrow. It is predicted to get warmer at the weekend.
