I was hoping to get a job - as, I presume, most Xmas casuals were - so have gone in every time I've been asked, worked my b******s off every shift, even done three 14-hour shifts in a row...and yesterday I receive an email from Angard tellng me that I will now be contracted to them.
And my reward? A REDUCTION from the already-low hourly rate to the minimum wage...
Rumours abound about various hourly pay increases once you've worked for x amount of weeks, but do these still apply when working via Angard?
I don't undertand how it works...and I've certainly never come across an employer who seemingly 'rewards' you with a pay decrease...
Yes it only happens with an Agency - it would be unlikely to increase if working direct for the employer (Royal Mail) as they have no legal requirement to pay more than minimum wage.
RM have always paid a higher amount for Christmas casual work than year round work. The pay we received as RM casuals, prior to transfer to Angard, was minimum wage but it would increase by between 20p and 40p for the Christmas work period.
I was supposed to be in tonight 18:00 - 22:00, and after all the trouble getting there because of the snow, and the area I live in, I was told to go home because I didn't have any ID. This is the same reception staff who were there for the 7 weeks I worked and on Friday night. If I had a badge it would be much easier, I didn't realise I would have had to take my Passport everyday. Just a joke to be fair. Wasted £18.50 to get there, and I'm not even sure I'll be in after Wednesday lol. 2 hours to get home, it's been a bad day.

Your going in to do a 4 hour shift earning, at most, £24.76 and it costs you £18.50 to get there and then takes 2 hours to get home - why?!!!!!!

Well, I have 4 hours Tuesday and 4 hours Wednesday as well, and I hoped to get an extra day or two. That £18.50 is a weekly saver. As the text messages have been frequent lately I'm hoping for more shifts but I'm not holding my breathe. I paid the £18.50 as it would have cost £13.50 just for the three days. It took 2 hours to get home because of the weather. Usually takes me like 45/50 minutes.

Ah - thought you were spending £18.50 a day just to get there - more sense to have the weekly ticket. The unfortunate thing with this is that Angard/RM at the place I work at very rarely book you in advance so you never know what you will work in a week. For 2012 I was only booked for about 4 weeks in advance (lost 3 days in on of those weeks before the week started) as well as Christmas (booked for 4 weeks solid but 1 week of which got cancelled after the first day). Good luck.
I am really confused, I just received My Angard Contract in the Post, I have been told by my Union Rep, that after 2 Weeks, that I will be re-instated
as a Royal mail employee, so I have to get My P45 from Royal Mail, send it to Angard, then send it back to Royal Mail, does any of this make
sense or has the same thing happened to you? Other people have been told, but I feel something isn't right here?

Sometimes you will get a few hours per week; sometimes you will get around 20 hours a week; sometimes you might get more; sometimes you may get nothing for the week or a few weeks. It really is very hit and miss for most people.
But I cannot understand why several colleagues of mine are given mostly 4 shifts per week but others just 3 or even mostly 2 . I have no clue. They all are hard workers.Maybe it is just a problem of sistem by Angard. What would be the reason of this mysterious lack of the equality?

Angard "claim to share" the work. My personal experience is some people will get more shifts than others and it seems to be the same people most of the time. It does not seem to have any reflection on the abiity or effort put in by the people in terms of work - Angard do not know who works well or not so well. Angard are only interested in getting numbers into the RM places that need people and do not appear to care who gets in. We often play the Text Scramble. This is where Angard text all or most casuals at the mail centre and tell us there are shifts available for today or this week or next week. The casuals then have a scramble to call Angard back to book the shifts - seems like they get booked on first come first booked basis. So if your lucky you get in on all shifts available (or those you are able to do) or at least some - if your unlucky you dont get in at all and make a telephone call for nothing.

Yes. Sometimes we have these Text Scrambles but mainly Angard is texting us if we are booked few hours before shift. But there is some people who have at least 4 to 3 shifts a week regulary booked in this way. We know well they are not booked on first come first booked basis. It is not fair. The system is realy poor. Maybe we have to ring them for more work. No idea...
