HE Post Office is negotiating to take on a big chunk of routine police business, such as inspecting documents and taking down lost property reports.
The idea is to create mini police bureaux in post offices to replace police station front counters, many of which are being closed because of “the cuts”.
But how will Post Office staff find the time to deal with extra duties? There are invariably long queues and customers take up so much time when they finally reach the counter.
A pile of us recently watched with gnashing teeth as a woman asked for individual receipts on sheafs of stamps.
Foreigners who can barely speak English make incomprehensible demands and people want fiddly transactions.
Then, just as you think you are getting there, “Position Closed” appears at the window.
If counter staff have to listen to interminable descriptions of how someone has lost their cat or their bike has been stolen we’ll have to take sleeping bag.
