We had a lot of problems in 'the old days' getting pouch boxes put up round my way.
You are perfectly correct postmen, we too had loads of problems getting permission, and the council wanted money and RM baulked at that in the end they just gave up. In the whole of our not inconsiderable area we have only a handful mostly connected to post boxes.

Are the pouch boxes fixed to the pillar boxes the oldest variety? I'm basing that assumption mainly on seeing a photo of my old walk from 1992 with the box attached - research, you understand :nervous

The ones I have seen are bolted to the side of the upright boxes.

The trolly's were brought in due to health & safety regulations ie: loads of people claiming compo from RM regarding bad backs etc...

I might well be wrong, but i would say that Park & Loop is here to stay. :wave
The H&S arguement for park and loop is a load of crap. There's fellas out in Afghanistan carrying more weight than us on their backs every day, in extreme heat, humidity, getting attacked by Taliban rather than dogs or smack heads. True they have more up to date kit for their job nowadays but when did you ever see,
'42 commando Royal Marines' pulling an f*&%$n trolly from a van with all their kit in it to save their aching backs.
Just about killed that H&S arguement. The closest thing to that is the Swiss Army using bicycles like us for a speedy silent and swift approach. The enemy can't smell the diesel and can't hear the engine on a bike.

Who ever came up with trollies is off their trolly. If you want a modern day trolly, make sure that it's robotic and follows you as you go around the walk. C3PO can do one side while you do the other. R2D2 can drive the van.

That would require some kind of battery, and if it's anything like the ones in the PDAs :whistle

we have good batteries, last for approx 40 years of working life with a bit of recharging, I find pushing a trolley around far better than trying to carry an over weight bag around on my shoulder although bike and bag probably beats them all.

An infantry soldier is usually removed from combat duty at maximum age 40.
The reality is it's normally long before this.
There used to be a thing called continuance which allowed certain mentalists to remain on active service until 45.
Those kind of guys usually don't carry much more than a killing thing and a Zapata moustache.

The average age of a combat soldier in the UK is between 20 and 21.
The average age of a combat postie in the UK is between 45 and death.

Well sharkeyes the weight of a pack depends on what you are doing, where you are and where you are going. There are light weight modes and indeed the kit is now designed to be lightweight. You would not be carrying full gear over any great distances nowadays and most troops including infantrymen/women would largely be mobile. Fully laden a kit could weigh 80lbs and if you had that much weight plus your weapons believe me you wouldn't be a runner - a casual plod would be nearer the mark :Very Happy

Crap.

They have down time. They have a fitness regime which is monitored by the Unit. They have medics on hand all day and every day. They have camel backs and usually replenishment water within 5 to 10 minutes call (dependent on tactical situation). The gaffers usually rotate them to avoid fatigue. Its extremely unusual to need to carry a bergen in a tactical situation, it makes you a target, and if they do its usually the tactical/patrol one, not the deployment one, and therefore a lot lighter. Also its fully supported across the back, shoulders, hips etc and usually tightly packed to avoid noise and movement, and fitted to each soldiers own preferences. (over a decade experience)

It certainly isn't a big red handbag that lets in rain, falls apart at the seams, so badly designed the straps/clips fail on a regular basis and that its nearly impossible to keep the load inside balanced.
