Much like the train industry yesterday, Royal Mail needs to realise that while it may be a virtual monopoly, it can’t keep ramping up its prices without some sort of improved service.
The company controversially in April ramped up prices for a first-class stamp from 46p to 60p and second class from 36p to an almost criminal 50p.
The extra cash was to be used to try to maintain its services and protect six-day-a-week delivery Yet, as our latest survey shows, customers are being woefully let down in terms of getting what they pay for.
Every time we do our post test, Royal Mail says it is only a small sample and its own commissioned surveys puts the first-class delivery rate at 92.6 per cent on time.
Yet in all four of the tests we have done, Royal Mail has never come near achieving that target.
Two of the letters that we paid 60p to have delivered didn’t turn up for four days. That’s just unacceptable.
Royal Mail is by far the dominant force in the market but we know anecdotally of people now sending fewer items because of the cost.
It cannot afford to continue to be so arrogantly dismissive of the real service flaws we continue to uncover.

perhaps if ROYAL MAIL employed people, to make sure the public got what they pay for, there would be less complaints,, there is less and less delivery staff, year on, year out, staff not being replaced, a below skeleton work force in delivery.. delivery now cannot be done properly any more,,, in our office every time a post person leaves, they are not replaced.. there is now No people in delivery to do the work required to keep up a good service to the public that pay for it.. and its only getting worse... so the only People to blame here, is Mora Greene, mark higson and senior managers for running a once excellent company down to being ruined,,,,, so sad to see Royal Mail deliberately destroyed..

when did they post their latest test letters? as this article is dated 3rd Jan I'm guessing during christmas pressure during which I believe the standard time scales do not apply so what do they expect?TrueBlueTerrier wrote: Two of the letters that we paid 60p to have delivered didn’t turn up for four days. I might be wrong of course but we need some actual facts to form an opinion, not some wannabe writers personal agenda thinly veiled as reporting

"customers are being woefully let down in terms of getting what they pay for" - but the great majority of 'customers' are (1) DSA companies who get us to deliver theoir mail for next to nothing (2) big businesses who get a hefty discount with their PPI mail and (3) small businesses who make quite a saving with their meter franked mail.
'Customers' who buy a stamp for 50p or 60p are a small segment of the market and don't count for much.
- that's how it is on the way to privartisation.
