A postman delivering Christmas presents was injured after he bravely tried to stop a a thief stealing a van load of gifts.

The postie had hopped out of the vehicle to drop off a delivery when the crook jumped in and started to drive off.

The mailman chased after and clung to the vehicle shouting at the yob who carried on speeding off before the postman fell and was left in the road.

The incident happened in Downing Road, Meadowhead, Sheffield, at about 11am on Thursday when the Citroeen Belingo van was driven off. It was found abandoned soon afterwards but a number of parcels had been taken. The postman was not seriously hurt.

Police said the Royal Mail worker was delivering parcels in Downing Road, Meadowhead, Sheffield, at around 11 am when he saw his white Citroen Berlingo being driven away.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “The postman attempted to stop the van and as a result he was dragged along for a short distance and received minor injuries.

“The suspect is described as a white and, aged about 20. He was unshaven and was wearing a black hooded top and jeans.

“The van was recovered a short time later and a number of parcels were reported to have been stolen.”

Investigations are continuing and anyone with any information was urged to contact South Yorkshire Police.

doesnt look like a dodgy area but these scumbags are all over just waiting for the opportunity it needs to be stresssed in wtl and maybe focused on by rmtv just how important it is to safeguard your vehicle keeping your job should be enough incentive for anyone to not leave the keys in the van.

I make an attempt to always take time to secure my van every time, even for those "2 seconds" deliveries. Once you get into the habit it becomes automatic, but pressure builds up. Where I work some people come in early, very early and cut corners all the time. Yes the law of averages they will come undone, but when your personal productivity is constantly being measured against their out put, no matter how strong you are it does chip away at you. Never give up but sometimes you do think will I just join the sh..t heap but you must stay strong. :Boo hoo!

Sadly, you're almost certainly right. When will RM acknowledge that we're all, only Human, and make mistakes occasionally. Particularly when put under pressure. :no no :arrrghhh :hmmmm

Yes, the Postie made a fundamental mistake. But who hasn't f***ed up at some point?
At least he put his life on the line, to try to protect the mail. Doesn't that count for anything any more?

Why when someone makes a mistake, do people straight away come on with the "hes lost his job" line. As the poster said above hes made a mistake ffs.Nobody should lose their job because some scumbag tried to steal the mail off them. It was a mistake and postman and especially managers make plenty every week!

A mistake Edward?

When do you normally leave your keys in your private car with the engine running? I doubt your own private car insurance will pay out?

Don't give RM a reason to get rid of you!

I'm not condoning him, there's no doubt that he made a fundamental mistake. But what you need to bear in mind, is that there's often emense pressure to get the work done in a timescale that's virtually impossible without cutting corners. Sometimes people can't take the pressure, and in their panic, make mistakes that simply wouldn't happen if they were calm. :hmmmm

I used to work (briefly) for an insurance company while I was working for a related breakdown company, and we were given an example of a case where someone had left the keys in the ignition (engine off) at a petrol station and gone in to pay. It was ruled that they hadn't left the vehicle unattended as they could see it at all times so the insurance had to pay out.

Another one...

A POST van was stolen mid-way through deliveries, Royal Mail has confirmed.

The van, which had a small quantity of mail on, was taken by a thief whilst the driver had been on delivery duty in Plymouth on Thursday December 13.

Police have since recovered the van and some tampered mail which will be returned to customers.

Royal Mail spokesperson, Adrian Booth, said: "We can confirm that a van was stolen on December 13 in the Plymouth area. The van has been recovered and the matter is currently been investigated by the police.

"A very small quality of mail was involved as the driver was at the end of the delivery round, but one or two items had been tampered with. The recovered parcels have now been released by the police for onward delivery or collection by customers."

With regard to these type of news items and there are plenty of them on this subject nobody wants anyone to be sacked, but the majority do get sacked.

Also I post them to neither condemn the postie or to hope they get sacked. I merely post them in the hope that a member on here remembers one of the articles and doesn't take the chance.

Yes we are all adults and we all make mistakes, however one of the facets of being an adult is that you face the consequences of your decisions. If your decision is to save a few minutes and take a chance on losing your job you can hardly say it was unexpected when a scroat nicks the van. Likewise if you decide to lock the van every-time, you know that 90% of the bosses at Royal Mail will put pressure on you.

The decision is yours a life time of regrets if the worst happens, or an ear bending every day by some incompetent chargehand who couldn't operate a clock work radio without going on a course for it.

As always I never want anyone to get the sack, however if we can make a driver have second thoughts when he tries something similar then in my opinion its always worth posting such articles. An ordinary man learns by his own mistakes, a wise man learns by the mistakes of others.
