Short Term, Xmas only Casuals - Royal Mail Employees
Year Round Casuals (inc. Xmas) - Angard Employees

Occasional emergency - Manpower, City Centre etc.

AWR are rights gained when an Agency worker has the same placement for 12 weeks with no more than a 6 week gap. The rights are to have the same wages and conditions as regular workers. So six weeks without at least one shift in a 'Year Round Casuals' placement would save Angard/RM a lot of money.

What is AWR?
The Agency Workers Regulations (AWR) was implemented in the UK on 1st October 2011. The purpose of the regulations is to provide temporary workers with equal treatment in terms of basic working and employment conditions as if they had been employed directly to do the same job. The rights will apply after a 12 week qualifying period.

Following the 12 week qualifying period the temporary workers will be entitled to equal treatment, including; pay, working hours, overtime, breaks, holidays and access to training and collective facilities. Equal treatment does not apply to sick pay or paternity/maternity leave.

Thank you .Is this something that happens automatically ?
Only if employed by an Agency (Angard) not if you are employed direct by the Hirer (Royal Mail).

If employed by Royal Mail I suspect you will be paid minimum wage after Christmas Eve - not the slight amount above minimum wage you get now.

...............

True but if RM employ any of their casuals for 12 weeks after Xmas, Angard workers really ARE in trouble.

Any new Casuals should be transfered to Angard ideally, as things stand at the moment

I was asked, but turned it down as I wasn't sure I could make it all.

Not heard anyone else mention anything yet.

All us casuals on nightshift were last night asked if we wanted to put our names forward to be part of Angard's pool of staff to be used as and when needed on nights in future.

Not everyone who offered themselves will be accepted apparently but "management will decide who".. given only our line manager, who was asking us, has any clue how we've performed individually I took that to mean he's going to decide.

Two comments on this topic
Firstly relating to the original posting about being told that the person might be offered work after Christmas but 'don't tell anyone else'. This happened at our mail centre last year and it didn't seem a very good way of going about things. Obviously in the last few days before christmas all the casuals were asking each other 'have you been asked to come back after Christmas?' Management seemed to expect people to lie to each other. How can you expect to have an honest workforce on this basis? It seems much better to be completely open about who will be offered work but Royal Mail seem to be incapable of being clear and straightforward hence all the problems that angard staff continue to experience.
Secondly I had similar concerns as an angard employee to those people have already expressed in this topic about angardees being replace by new Royal Mail casuals after Christmas. It may not be very good for the RM casuals but I was quite pleased to see that they all had there IDs taken from them after their last shift. Hopefully some of the best performing ones will be taken on by Angard. However I haven't been told about any work after Christmas, but this might just be typical Angard way of working and I won't hear until the last minute. I'm still assuming they'll need people as like last year their staff will take time off.

christmas cassy,s now started at YDC . so regular angard staff whos been there from the start now only been offered 1-2 shifts per week .we already have too many staff for the amount of work ,so to take on 25-30 more is AWR avoidance pure and simple .SHAME ON ROYAL MAIL .poor way to treat loyal hard working staff.
