Humiliation @ MDEC Stockport

Hi all, I worked one week @ Stockport MDEC, I have done training for one week, unfortunately i did not pass the final assessment and got %75, it was total humiliation when they start shouting at our names to go to a different room to tell us that we are failed and they can't offer us employment, why they done that, everyone in the office knew that the names called are failed.

I think the best way to do it is to approach people individually without hurting them and tell them the outcome nicely

I never been humiliated in my life more than in this Christmas causal. I think its total exploitation that you want to do all this heavy work for just £6.19 an hour.

They don't treat you as a human there, even animals have more rights than you!!!

I doubt they have time to worry about hurting people's feelings.

I think it is better that way than telling the whole group or telling you whilst you are still in the same room as all the other workers. If they came around 1 by 1 these people would have to then walk past the others, which for me would be worse

Its the same way they treat permanent staff unfortuanetly. I have seen, and tackled it, people being called lazy banksters in the middle of the office, or being talked to as though they were something you would want to wipe off.

Royal Mail do not do motivation or treatment of worker in an adult and responsible fashion. In my mind its all down to the 1970s macho culture that is prevalent in its management structure from Top to bottom. I had hoped it would change when a woman was given the top job, however it got worse and she is either complicit in it, ignorant of it, condones it, or completely ambivalent about it. The CUPW gives a clue as to their feelings if you read some of their stuff when she was in charge over there.

You got training?!?!?! Apart from a H+S induction, we got nothing. We had to figure it out as we went. I'm still learning things 2 weeks on!!

We were given the worst "welcome to the company" speech at Stockport MDEC I have ever heard. The guy just basically had a go at us for us for 10 minutes telling us that we would all get bad references and be banned from ever working there again if we did anything wrong. I sort of hope that's true now as I never want to ever work there again. What a terrible place with terrible managers. The so called team leader that I had was completely clueless and she didnt even know how to organise a staggered break pattern.

He's a joker, 2 workers told me someone had to be stopped from using violence on him over an argument caused by the high level of his earphones. He came over to my team coach and said to her that I should be sacked, he thought I couldn't hear him and when I looked at him in acknowledgement he scarpered. What a wombat! lol

The place isn't that bad though I guess your experience does largely depend on what person happens to be your manager. Mine was, in one word, lovely; assertive as a manager needs to be but respectful, friendly and just generally pleasant as well, and a good motivator too. The night shift manager, who came in to talk to us during our visual display unit assessment at the start of live keying and at the end of our work on Thursday, also seemed like a pleasant person too, saying how we wanted us to feel like we were part of the Royal Mail despite the mundane nature of our work, and wishing us luck in our careers at the end of our concluding shift......made me feel quite sad actually that we weren't working any longer.

As for calling out the names of the people who hadn't passed the assesssments, it might have seemed cruel but that was probably the quickest way to break the news since they didn't know everyone's names. I guess they could have gone round and taken those who hadn't passed aside, breaking it to you gently that way but that would have taken longer. If it's any consolation, - and I mean this in the nicest way possible - I doubt anyone will have remembered the names they mentioned at the end of that week anyway; it's not like someone will come up to you in the future and say, "Hey, you're one the guys who failed the MDEC training, aren't you?"
