Thats official I wont be returning to do casual work next year.
Done it before many times in various locations and know loads of good royal mail lads. Had a break from it and tried it again at a northern dist centre and then was utterly appalled at the depths that they have stooped to get the work done for minimum wage. out of 12 new starts each week only 3 or 4 remain by the end of the week....Fact. Health and safety is a joke RM staff flying about on FLT's within a few feet of workers Fact...issue im now about to forward to H&S exec...health and safety guy cant wait to get home for his tea what a joke.
Management.....lets get the job done hit the target by any means possible....me and a couple of lads bailed them and RM staff out many times and then was just left high and dry for support regarding staffing and breaks. I'm a human being not a bloody animal that you whip to get the job done while the blokes on double my wage are stood about having a chat about X-factor

But be fair Health and Safety in deliveries is non-existent .

There are some very good, knowledgeable Health and Safety Reps and also some decent Health and Safety Managers (the ones actually qualified in H&S) who genuinely care about the welfare of the staff and are committed to making RM a safe place to work.

The problem comes when pressure is brought to bear on Ops of all functions to do things on a shoestring and without the correct alignment of staffing to workload. H&S basically gets shoved to one side to get the work out and this is down to line management. There are noticeboards, risk assessments, WTLLs, SSOW, SOPs but all of these are disregarded if the pressure is on. In the case of poorly planned revisions unsafe working practises are actually built into duty structures and become custom and practise whether it be the use of incorrect equipment or insufficient time for RA or Meal Breaks.

Christmas is a classic time for H&S (which is one of the pillars for WCM) to be put to one side. Casuals are not trained correctly and even the hire vehicles are not fit for purpose by virtue of their narrow tail lifts. I could go on ... and no doubt all of you here see flagrant disregard for H&S on a daily basis. Post privatisation will things improve ... NO.
