have i not been taxed?

Post by royal_mail »

i got my payslip today and the hours and gross pay was bang on. i sent my p45 in early this week and they have even managed to change the tax code. but the only deductions to my wage is NIC, no other deductions. Oh and this is all directly through royal mail not angard or manpower etc.

having done some work before I started with the Royal Mail, I was very disappointed to see my tax code change to "emergency code" three times as much tax, for twice as many hours.

mine was around £10. So does that mean they paid us wrong as they didnt deduct tax? are they going to ask for anything back?

did you not give them your p45? p46 is as good as nothing because handing that in would mean you would be on emergency tax rate, and even if you dont hand anything in you would still be on emergency tax rate. p45 is the main one.

Have you earned any money in this tax year ..??

''Nearly everyone who is resident in the UK for tax purposes receives a 'Personal Allowance', which is an amount of taxable income you're allowed to earn or receive each year tax-free.
This tax year (2012-13) the basic Personal Allowance - or tax-free amount - is £8,105. .

Income Tax is only due on taxable income that's above your tax-free allowances.''

Tax is paid on a weekly basis if you are paid weekly - you do not earn £8105 then start paying tax. The allowance is normally spread over 52 or in this year 53 weeks. So you are taxed based on a weekly allowance which is currently around £153. Hence you have to earn more than £153 to pay tax - if you earn less you do not pay tax for that week. As you have not earned this per week throughout the year you need to work out a new weekly allowance based on the yearly allowance, your yearly pay and number of weeks left until 5th April 2013.

Simplistically (when is tax simplistic)

Assuming you were paid £2000 throughout the year, until you started working with RM, with say 18 weeks left until 5th April - your weekly allowance is then 8105 - 2000 (i.e. 6105) divided by the number of weeks left (i.e. 6105/18 = £339). Therefore £339 becomes your weekly allowance so if you earn less you pay no tax if you earn more you pay some tax. Each time you earn less than the tax threshold for the week a new weekly tax threshold is then determined to spread the allowance over the remaining weeks in the tax year. If in one week you earn more than the tax threshold then in another week you earn less than the threshold - the threshold is re-worked and you may get some tax back you have already paid in the weeks above the threshold.

that makes perfect sense cheers pal, looks like i wont be getting taxed whilst working here then :Very Happy

is this for everyone then? like say someone has been working with a certain company for a few years, when the new tax year starts are they eligible for the personal allowance which is tax free before they start paying taxes?

I think the tax year runs from 6th April to 5th April the next year. This year is the 2012 to 2013 tax year and the allowance allowed is 8105. Each year every PAYE person is given a new allowance and start paying tax based on that allowance.
