'Make Sure You Leave Packages With Neighbours If They're In,' MP reminds Royal Mail

Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley & Holderness, said "With Christmas coming it's really important that people get their Royal Mail items as quickly as possible. It's extremely frustrating to find that your eagerly awaited package has been taken back to the delivery office.

"The good news is that for the first time Royal Mail is able to leave items with neighbours. Royal Mail asked their regulator, Ofcom, for permission to change the way they do things and the new Delivery to a Neighbour scheme started on 1 October. This new scheme is a great new service for my constituents and that's why I contacted Royal Mail and asked them to make sure that items are left with neighbours wherever possible, to save people the trouble of arranging a re-delivery, or travelling to the delivery office to collect them.

"At this time of year it's especially important to know what's going to happen to any bulky items that won't fit through your letterbox when you're not in to answer the bell. If your neighbours aren't at home either, the postman will put a card through your letterbox called Something for you. This card tells you your options which are: to have your item redelivered on a day that suits you, to have your item redelivered to any other address within your postcode, or to go to the delivery office yourself to collect it. These services are free. Alternatively, you can have your item dropped off at your local post office for a £1.50 fee."

Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley & Holderness should have more important things to do with his time than read from the RMTV autocue.

I'll start trying to leave stuff with neighbours when our managers decide to actually give us an official brief on this and more importantly appropriately reduce the number of delivery points per walk to allow time for attempting delivery with neighbours (mind you, that would involve first reducing walk sizes to cope with typical attendance call rates well above their model 3%, before reducing walk sizes further to allow time with contract hours to try neighbours).

Breaking news: Trying to leave packets with neighbours and then returning to the recipient's address to leave a P739 telling them where there parcel is takes extra time (typically ~2mins if sucessful with first neighbour). Despite the "offical" report saying it takes no extra time. ;liar :left: :left: :left:

As a reserve on a different round every week how do I know the next door neighbour isn't going to steal the packet and deny ever receiving it? :hmmmm

That's what I do, I don't have time to go knocking on their neighbour's doors anyway despite the RM bullshit that it doesn't take any longer.

After trying three times in a row with three different parcels on three different streets and every single neighbour refusing, saying they weren't going to do my job for me I made an "executive" decision and reverted to the tried and trusted method. That being if people order stuff, but can't be bothered to arrange for someone to be in at the delivery address then I card it.

Doing this adds time to my delivery as it is anyway, anything up to about 20-30mins a day, as no doubt it does to others as well, so it's bloody annoying having to be told to do this by a sodding MP or two who are jumping on the band-wagon. Instead of spouting off about this.

Waste of bloody time as others have said and if people can't even be in when something they've ordered can't be delivered safely then why the hell should I put my job and their item at risk!
I think about the risk and then if I know someone is in next door, and also that it's not a trek to go back and forth to a neighbour, then I'll leave a card. (ie a neighbours door is next door, ie next to it and not 20-30yrs plus!)
So like others I make a decision based on security.. 739 it and then take it back to the office.

Especially at this time of year they should know better and if they have somewhere safe to leave it, and they give me written permission to do so then I will. If not then it's back to the office with the item in question.

They (the MP's) talk the talk. I wanna see them walk the walk, in more ways than one!

If people really want things delivered to their neighbours then maybe they should use the RM Tracked service and make sure there's a little note on the packet telling us where they want it delivered :Very Happy

It was great to meet the hard-working Royal Mail postmen and women at Irvine delivery office and to see at first hand just how much effort they put into delivering for people at this time of year
Doesn't take long on the internet to find plenty of MP clones saying not only "With Christmas just a few weeks away, it is really important that residents get their parcels and deliveries from the Royal Mail ...." :cuppa but also “Postmen and women do such an important job at this time of year. I’d like to thank them for their efforts and wish them all the best over the busy festive period.” :cuppa Why do we bother voting ?

This may be the last Christmas it happens LL.
I doubt if MPs will be allowed to pass off an RM press release as their own words if the company is in private hands.
