Reclaiming Tax An Impossible Task?

Post by Rafiki »

I was on here a year ago about tax, I was on here about 8 months ago about tax, I was even on here about 4-5 months ago about tax, and whatever advice I get, it doesn't seem to resolve the issue, I'm totally lost.

Never received last years tax from Angard Staffing (Emergency tax £149.99 or something) and so far with The Royal Mail I have been taxed £111 for 3 weeks work including both income tax and national insurance contributions.

I wasn't sure if this was correct or not so I give the Christmas Casual team a ring answered some details, and the woman on the phone told me that I have an 810L tax code which is what many people have but then I have a /1 which means a week 1 emergency code.

I was told to ring HMRC because they couldn't do anything about it. Phoned HMRC, and she then said that I must wait 28 working days for the Job Centre to hand them a P45 so they can update my tax code. I will be gone from the Christmas Casual payroll by then, so I asked what do I do about this tax that is building up for this years pay? I was told when I finish the job and get a P45 from The Royal Mail to take that into The Job Centre and let them process the P45 and I will be paid the money in April.

With the Emergency Tax I was told that I am due a payment but they are missing data from 2011/2012 from The Job Centre. Phoned them up, and they didn't have a clue what I was on about, nor did I. It's just one huge mess in reclaiming tax. Everyone else just seem to get a refund, with mine it has been a nightmare since day 1, and I still don't know how to reclaim it. 3 phone calls and on the phone for about an hour and half, and I'm still no further in my quest to reclaim.

Is the best thing to just forget about this tax? Seems to be way too much effort in trying to get the tax back. I just don't have a clue how to do it. Been on the phone like 5 times overall during the past year with HMRC and still nothing.

For the current position at The Royal Mail I sent a P46 or P60 in about 2 months ago. I did intend on sending a P45 as well, but I never received one from The Job Centre. So I couldn't.

HMRC is your only place for 2011/2012 tax year - you should get it back from them once they have your complete records.

For this year if you get your P45 get it to RM asap - if you can get it to them before your final payslip and they process it for then your tax should be corrected for this year (2012/2013). If you do not get it back by then it will be a case of contacting HMRC again.
