On one of the heaviest postal delivery days of the year, spare a thought for your postie!

Monday 17th December is expected to be one of the busiest days of the year in the postal industry with tens of millions of items in the system being sorted and delivered across the UK in a Christmas rush of cards and presents.

This is the first-ever National Postal Workers Day, celebrating the hard work and dedication of hundreds of thousands of women and men who collect, sort and deliver letters, parcels and packets, including those working in post offices who collect and manage packets and parcels and many working behind the scenes to make the post a success for everyone across the UK. Come rain, shine, sleet or snow, the UK's posties are out delivering, transporting and sorting the mail, each playing their part in ensuring deliveries reach everyone, everywhere.

National Postal Workers Day celebrates these people, reminds the nation of the value of the service they provide and the sheer hard work that that so many people put in to sustain it. To celebrate National Postal Workers Day, the Communication Workers Union is asking the public to think of their postie, give them a smile and appreciate the work they do all year round.

Protect postal services for all

Billy Hayes, CWU general secretary, said: "Postal workers are out there sorting, driving and delivering mail to every address in the UK every week of the year. Christmas is an important time of year for the postal industry and postal workers face huge workloads and challenges which they always rise to."

Dave Ward, CWU deputy general secretary, said : "The post is for life, not just for Christmas. Whether it's cards, bills, parcels, packets or letters, cards or presents, we all rely on the post in some way. Let's celebrate the great work of postal workers on 17th December - National Postal Workers Day - and protect the post for the interests of all in the future."

Billy and Dave will be meeting postal workers in Wimbledon, south west London, from 7am on 17th December.

Dave will then go on to meet workers at the London northern delivery office in Upper Street, Islington.

130 million items are expected to be in the Royal Mail system alone on the busiest day of the year. Postal workers for all companies are inundated with Christmas cards, presents, internet present shopping in various shaped and sized parcels and have to get these deliveries to and from businesses, customers, friends and family in all parts of the UK, from offices and flats to houses, factories, cottages and farms. And all this on top the usual mail.
