CWU members in Bristol are urging local Royal Mail managers not to put their city's Christmas at risk after the company's refusal to resolve delivery problems sparked a one-day strike today.

Branch secretary Dave Wilshire said that the union had repeatedly urged Royal Mail to "sit down with us and sort this out" following mounting operational difficulties caused by delivery methods revision at Bristol South East Delivery Office.
Dave explained that the revision, which was implemented last year, "hasn't worked since Day One - there are simply not enough people here to get the deliveries done in the times given.
"The problems have been steadily mounting and our repeated warnings to the management have been ignored - this is causing serious problems to residents in the area, but it's our members who are getting the blame from managers.

Dave continued: "As branch secretary, I've been getting more and more complaints from postal workers who tell me they're being bullied and harassed by managers who are stubbornly refusing to accept that it's their revision that's created the problem - not the front line postal workers, who are working harder than ever to serve the people of Bristol."
The union's key points that can resolve the dispute are, for a firm commitment from Royal Mail to fully review the delivery revision, for an independent review of all bullying and harassment grievances, and for a further commitment that the workforce will not be forced to work extra Saturdays.

"These are all perfectly reasonable and all within the current national agreements between CWU and Royal Mail," Dave pointed out, adding: "All our members want to do is a fair day's work without being bullied or harassed - and we're urging management to sit down with us and sort these problems out so we can deliver a happy Christmas to Bristol."
Unless the company resolves the issues, the union warns that today's action could be the first in a series of strikes.
