The problem is that a lot of the decent managers we had in the past have gone. Either reached retirement age or 'persuaded' to take VR/EVR. They were told that RM is changing and that they would be better off taking the money and leave. There are some decent managers left but they are often afraid to say or do what they think is right because they will be stabbed in the back by their fellow managers who are prepared to do anything to get another inch up the greasy pole.

It made me wonder, having read your post, how many on here are ex forces? Most people who I've come across who are reasonable Managers not necessarily here though there have been some have been ex forces.IWW Fellow Worker wrote:I've had fifteen different PEC's/DUM's since I started working for RM, and countless office boys. Since 1980, I've had one who I genuinely respected. He was a real manager, who knew how to sort out problems and knew how to handle people. He was ex-army and looked after the staff. If he were alive today, I don't know what he would make of the 'yes' men and incompetents we've got running our office these days. That's one man out of about fifty who reckon they're managers and who we've had the misfortune to have at our DO.
We have probably seen active service and the one thing that usually marks ex servicemen is their ability not to make a mountain out of a molehill, and to cover peoples backs, not to be selfish and to share what we had, water, food, ammo. How many ex NCOs who have commanded men without expecting more from them than they were prepared to give.

I think Teebs and other ex-forces people will understand this. I have had the same experience with ex-forces managers.L Tommo wrote:IWW Fellow Worker wrote:I've had fifteen different PEC's/DUM's since I started working for RM, and countless office boys. They expect you to get the job done, but as long as you do they will look after you. I think that is the forces ethos - look after your people and they will do their best and will respect you. Something Leighton and Crozier and their acolytes will never understand. :lfo :cfo

Re: EX SCREW
I'm not moaning about it. I'm not going "boo hoo woe is me" unlike many people. If you like I could be just another corporate lacky with no opinions of my own, swallowing whatever the corporate line is, and regurgitating it unthinkingly, and I'm obviously not, or I'd be silently lurking, taking names and grassing you up as I am SURE some people have done. I've made clear I've beena thorn in some peoples sides because I ask questions and question senior decisions and they've made my life very difficult to punish me for not being a corporate lapdog. It was my decision to question them. Some of them value Yes Men more than people who have professional integrity and pride in their work.L Tommo wrote:STOP FECKING MOANING!!!

This isn't a battle between managers and posties : it's a battle between Senior Management and everyone else. Have I EVER given you any indication that I'm a "Spineless Yes Monkey"? If you paid any attention you'd see I am clearly not and I have been penalised by others as a result. Don't proclaim judgement on me from a position of ignorance. You have NO IDEA my morals because you haven't paid any attention. You've just assumed "ALL MANAGERS BAD!" without paying the slightest attention to what is actually going on.
Maybe, just maybe, all Very Senior Managers think the Posties are thick or whatever, without paying any attention to the actual facts of the case. By making the same assumptions about managers you're frankly just as bad as them. Did you not pay any attention in diversity training that wasted some of the frankly useless WTL sessions?
Some managers bad. Some managers good. Some Posties bad. Some posties good. Just like everyone everywhere. The sooner we all stop squabbling amongst ourselves the sooner we can unite and overthrow.

It is though, and it's a battle which takes place every single morning without fail. As I said, managers are the face of those above them. They have volunteered to take the side of senior management. They are the eyes and ears of senior management. Every day in RM sees another battle in the class war taking place with managers leaning on new starters to take out amounts they can't cope with, of trying to get them to cover deliveries on walks they are unfamiliar with. Why do you suppose Crozier thanked them for everything they've done lately at the meeting on 11 September?

You would say that since it's now become clear that RM will dump on your pension rights as quickly as they would dump on ours.
Ex RM Manager wrote:The sooner we all stop squabbling amongst ourselves the sooner we can unite and overthrow.
You imply we have some sort of mutual interest. We don't. We have different aims and objectives. Management aim to get as much work out of us for as little in return as possible, and our aim is to stop them. And that remains the same no matter what the workplace and no matter what country it is in.

IWW what a great post and sums it up perfectly.
And EX i obviously understand you a bit more than the others and i have read you posts and know where you've been and where you're coming from and perhaps yes you're not a yes man.
But there will always be more to this than the two cretins at the top and THEIR highly payed yes men below them.
And below them the spinless puppets that we deal with day in and day out.
You have to be there 5/6 days a week to believe it mate.
It is impossible to change how we feel,it's just not gonna happen.
There are Managers and there are RM Managers, what ever grade, nuff said!

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

L THOMMO, I have a problem with your attitude, if someone makes a choice then it's their choice. It does'nt mean they are a spineless yes monkey, they may well be, or they could have very good reasons for their choice. I think it takes a lot of bottle to cross a picket, there are people in my office who totally disagree with the union but have not crossed the line, they are just as spineless as the yes men who do all the manager asks of them. As for me, I know I would'nt be brave enough to cross if I agreed with Leighton and crozier. Managers at our level are just as prone to bullying from above as we are, I have heard threats made to a DOM in my MC about his future and I have even heard about our SDOM getting a dressing down because ONE person in my section was booking pro delivery. My DOM is actually a decent bloke doing his best in the circumstances, tarring them all with the same brush is unfair tho it is true that the good one's are in a small minority.

Lets work this one out.
Most RM Managers follow the instructions of Senior Managers - they're the enemy (apparently).
Most Posties and Non-Managerial Staff follow the instructions of their Managers - they're not the enemy?
That's hypocritical.
One rule for you, one rule for the others.
(I would've said it's Senior Managers vs The Rest long before the Career Average Earning Pension issue came up - I can see that issue costing Leighton and Crozier their jobs)

All managers are the enemy since they are the agents of those who exploit the workers.Ex RM Manager wrote:Lets work this one out.

Sorry just from this one post you can see that you never worked on the Operational side. On deliveries there is a definite Us and Them feeling between all Managers and all Posties. Obviously there are some that don't fit this description but I would estimate that 98% of posties see it this way.Ex RM Manager wrote:Lets work this one out.

However I fully agree with you about about the Pension issue this is the make or break issue for those 2.

i still say that to win this we need the operational managers on our side they are not all bad some of them just do the job for the money not out of an ideal or political stance, when i was bossin my dom always refered to the staff as them something i could never get my head round but my fellow line managers did not,we have to remember they are employed to get the best out of us something we are not going to enjoy and we do have some lazy bar stewards amongst our numbers
