Well I couldn't personally say what the job loss figure would be but considering that there has already been a loss of some 60,000 over a period of time then job losses doesn't appear to be an issue and of course it continues now even without a 5 day delivery. People are under the misapprehension that the job as it is now is immutable and that is a very very dangerous premise. I worked in the ESI for many years and the systems were tinkered with year in year out for no apparent gain............now tell me you think that those industries are run on the same lines now as when they were in government hands. I still speak on occasion to ex colleagues and there isn't the faintest comparison. I can certainly guarantee that once privatised the sole purpose of Royal Mail will be to make money for investors and the employees will be at the bottom of the pile depending who remains as employees - many of the disciplines will be sold off or franchised andthose people will no longer be employees of the parent company. Really that is the reason you need a strong union who does make life difficult for the company and causes problems, unlike the GMB who sold out its members in order to be still sat at the table and I see many similarities in the present climateclashcityrocker wrote:1. You are only approaching the problem from a DO perspective only. Moving to a 1 in 5 scenario would impact on processing and distribution as well. There would be job losses in MCs and professional drivers as well.Judgee wrote:Ok someone please explain to me how going to mon-fri week equates to losing 1 in 6 jobs?
The volume of mail will be the same only spread over 5 days instead of 6. Well I work my hours in full and do 5 days out of 6 a week. If the volume of mail during the week is increased I can do no more. I cut off now so I will just have to cut off more if that ever happened. Therefore the number of rounds would have to increase to compensate for the extra mail every day. Ok so it may not be as many as needed for 6 day delivery but it would increase. The fact remains there is only a certain amount of mail you can deliver in a day. So yes there would be fewer jobs but not 1 in 6 that's pie-in-the-sky figures. The rest of the job losses could easily be dropped through VR so what's the problem?
Going mon-fri would not lead to the mass cull in work force that some people seem to think and for those of us with a life outside RM it would make life a hell of alot better!
The only real drop would be in union fees due to less members and as the CWU do feck all for thier money most of the time so does anyone really give a sheet?
2. How many VRs (at approx £30 000 each) do you think RM will happily give out? Do they throw them around likw confetti in your area.
3. It wouldn't just mean a drop in subs. The loss of so many members would probably mean the end of the CWU as an independant trade union.
4. If 1 in 6 is "pie in the sky figures" - how many job losses are acceptable to you? 1 in 8? 1in 10?

Re: mon to friday delivery
When I signed up to be a postman, Saturday was morning only. That was one reason I took the job.
Years later, and with nobody, neither customers, or staff, wanting it so, RM management decide to make Saturday an all-dayer.
Didn't mind working Saturday morning, but do mind working all day Saturday.
Now, Saturday working can be consigned to the scapheap, as far as I'm concerned.
One way, or another.....Staffing levels will continue to fall as this miserable company continues it's never-ending programme of cuts, cuts, and more cuts.
If anybody has issues with postal workers wanting to be rid of Saturday working, then take them to the RM management who decided to abandon a very amicable arrangement, purely out of the spite and malice they have for their workforce.
Staff will be got rid of, whatever happens.

Re: mon to friday delivery
i dont know how they could cancel saturdays, its one of the busiest days of the week in our office! there was so much on yesterday that people were asked to come in to work today to do what couldnt be done yesterday! saturdays are vital i believe as thats when you can get parcels/tracked/recorded's/specials delivered! getting rid of saturdays is wanted by the top brass for one reason alone: cut the number of posties!

Re: mon to friday delivery
If RM did make it a five-day delivery then i reckon it would be Mondays that would be axed which would eliminate the need for Sunday working in MCs and RDCs also no professional drivers driving on Sundays would save RM a lot of money. Deliveries staff would probably end up working longer hours on the remaining days (or they would all end up part time). Possibly they would end up bolting collections onto the end of some deliveries.
There is no way that RM will do away with Saturday deliveries as there is more chance of someone being in at residential DPs. The only Saturday deliveries that they would do away with would probably be firms

Re: mon to friday delivery
Its simple really, they just stop delivering on Saturday, the work would then be spread across the five working days. Like many, you assume the system will remain as it is but that isn't a given. There are any number of permutations to deliver mail and parcels: one has already been suggested, I believe, where there is only one class of mail and it will be delivered as and when - if you require a next day delivery you pay extra. As you know many parcel deliveries are now carried out by owner drivers, even parcelforce..........now how difficult would it be to employ owner drivers carrying mail? Look at the time these people are delivering to homes these days - I've had parcels turn up at 8 at night.halfull wrote:i dont know how they could cancel saturdays, its one of the busiest days of the week in our office! there was so much on yesterday that people were asked to come in to work today to do what couldnt be done yesterday! saturdays are vital i believe as thats when you can get parcels/tracked/recorded's/specials delivered! getting rid of saturdays is wanted by the top brass for one reason alone: cut the number of posties!

As someone who delivers on a Saturday i can tell you that the myth that everyone is in on a Saturday is exactly that...a myth.SpacePhoenix wrote:There is no way that RM will do away with Saturday deliveries as there is more chance of someone being in at residential DPs. That used to be the case when we delivered between 0630 and 0900 but now by the time we get out there most people have gone, disappeared, vanished, either working themselves, shopping or just enjoying their weekend.
I P739 just as many packets on a Saturday as any other day of the week.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share
